Slatina Pod Hazmburkem can be explored through two distinct themes: the characteristic layout of the historic village center and the nature of the Vrch Hazmburk protected area. In the village, the settlement pattern and church take center stage; in the protected area, habitats, orchards and geological features shape the landscape. Nearby Házmburk Castle adds a walk through its outer grounds and views from the hill. You can choose whether to focus your stay on architecture, nature conservation or a visit to the castle.
Historic Village Center and Round Village
The original stone houses in Slatina stand in a flattened circle and form a round village square. In 1995, the historic village center was declared a protected conservation zone because of its 32 original structures. These include barns, boundary walls and gates typical of a Czech round village. The village center can therefore be understood not only through individual houses, but also through its settlement pattern and building types: the flattened circle of houses and the round village square describe two distinct but connected features of the village layout.
The Church and Its Building Phases
An originally Gothic church has stood in Slatina since the end of the 12th century. The Renaissance tower was built in 1595 and has a stone portal on the ground floor with an inscription about the church’s Renaissance reconstruction. After a reconstruction in 1746, it was rededicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. The church adds a historical perspective to the village square: in a single building, you can distinguish its Gothic origins, the Renaissance tower and reconstruction, and the later renovation and rededication.
Protected Area and Castle Views
Slatina lies at the eastern foot of the Házmburk castle ruins, between the floodplains of the Podsedický potok and the Rosovka. The Vrch Hazmburk natural monument also includes areas in Slatina. In the protected area, steppe and forest-steppe habitats, along with extensively managed orchards, cover about 60 percent of the land. There are also exposed basalt outcrops and scree slopes around the castle. Species of European importance protected in the area associated with Slatina include the grasshopper Stenobothrus eurasius and the Jersey tiger (Euplagia quadripunctaria). These details describe different aspects of the area: the approximate land share refers to habitats and orchards, while the basalt outcrops and scree slopes characterize the surroundings of the castle.
Nearby, Házmburk Castle offers a self-guided walk through its outer grounds. From the hill, views extend across the České středohoří and the Bohemian Central Highlands. The viewpoint is on the castle hill, while the village itself lies at the eastern foot of the ruins. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.
