Vražkov can be explored through two very specific themes: local history comes to life at the chapel, village square and older masonry; alongside these are several hiking destinations in different directions, each with its own endpoint. A Baroque chapel stands in the village centre, and a cross stands in the village square; trails lead from Vražkov to places including Průšův mlýn, Mnetěšská alej and Říp. When choosing the village for a trip, you can weigh up its historical connections and the specific trail destinations described here.
The Chapel, Village Square and Local History
In 1763, J. Kratochvíl had a Baroque chapel built in the village centre of Vražkov and donated it to the community. It also serves as a war memorial; a plaque bears the names and portraits of residents who fell in the First World War. A cross dating from 1846 stands in the village square; a bell tower was added beside it in the 1920s. The chapel links Baroque architectural history with remembrance of the war dead, while at the cross, an older landmark in the square was supplemented by a later structure.
Archaeological finds indicate that Vražkov is one of the oldest Slavic-settled communities in Bohemia. This early settlement represents a different historical timescale from the dated buildings in the village and broadens the perspective on local history. Another trace of the past can be found at Škodův statek: the cellar contains remnants of the walls of a Gothic fortress. The fortress stood on the site of the present-day building and was completely destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. These remnants add another type of historic building to the story of the village.
Hikes from Vražkov
The described walking and hiking routes differ mainly in their direction and destinations. An eastbound hike from Vražkov follows the shooting range and the Čepel stream to Průšův mlýn. A walking trail towards Mnetěš leads to the Mnetěšská alej educational trail; from there, it continues to Ledčice and HistoryPark Ledčice. One route therefore leads to Průšův mlýn, while the route via Mnetěšská alej has a specifically named continuation to Ledčice and HistoryPark.
Trail Destinations on Říp and Other Sights
A yellow-marked KČT hiking trail leads from Vražkov over a stony slope and past the Pražská vyhlídka viewpoint to the summit of Říp. At the foot of the mountain, a red-marked circular route with an educational trail around Říp also branches off. The difference is clear when choosing a route: the yellow markings lead past the named viewpoint to the summit; the red markings indicate a circular route with an educational trail at the foot of the mountain. Trail markings can change, so it is worth checking them before setting out.
The Hřbitov zvířat (Animal Cemetery) is in the cadastral area of Vražkov, at the foot of Říp, on the road from Vražkov towards Rovné. It has been in operation since 2003. If you plan to visit, please check current visiting arrangements in advance. The steppe slopes of Vínek near Vražkov are also of natural-history interest: narrow-leaved flax (Linum tenuifolium) was recorded there in 1956 at an altitude of about 230 metres. Alongside village history and hiking trails, visitors can therefore choose a botanical site and a record with a clearly specified date as themes for their trip.
