The highest summit in Štětsko is 348 metres tall and is called Újezdský Špičák. Alongside this clear connection to the landscape, Újezd is shaped by its early history and former agricultural activity. A regional educational trail also features a stop devoted to the agriculture of the Štětsko region.

Woodland scenery and summit

Újezd lies amid the forests of the Brocenská pahorkatina, which is part of the Dokeská pahorkatina. At 348 metres, Újezdský Špičák is the highest summit in Štětsko. This places a wooded hilly landscape and a clearly named summit side by side as two distinct natural features. The forest setting describes the village’s surroundings; the elevation makes the summit a specific point of reference for anyone wishing to explore the landscape through its topography as well.

The Kokořínsko Natura 2000 site includes the cadastral area of Újezd u Chcebuze and overlaps with the Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area. These are two distinct geographical descriptions: the designation of a cadastral area and the overlap of two protected areas.

The history of Újezdský Špičák extends beyond its elevation, too. When Antonín Veith owned the Liběchov estate, a wooden observation tower stood on the summit. A basalt quarry on Újezdský Špičák was exhausted by the end of the 19th century. The observation tower and quarry offer different historical insights into the same summit.

Local history and former agriculture

The first written mentions of Újezd date from 1230 to 1253. The village initially belonged to the Vyšehrad Chapter; from 1519, it belonged to Snědovice. In 1860, a fire destroyed twelve typical farmsteads. The early mentions and changes in ownership span a long period, while the fire marks a specific turning point in the 19th century. This event is therefore a later chapter in a much longer local history.

In the 19th century, exceptionally high-quality red hops were grown in Újezd. Historically, there were many orchards in the surrounding area. These details point to two distinct geographical aspects of agriculture: hop-growing in the village and orchards in its surroundings. Újezd’s agricultural past can thus be explored both within the village itself and in the nearby area.

A regional theme on the educational trail

Újezd is stop 10 on the Naučné putování loupežníka Štětky educational trail. The stop’s theme is agriculture in the Štětsko region. The trail is accessible on foot and by bicycle. Before setting out, it is advisable to check the latest trail conditions. The trail’s regional focus differs from the specific local connections to hop-growing and orchards. For travel planning, this offers two perspectives: former agricultural activity in Újezd and its surroundings, and the broader theme of agriculture across the Štětsko region.
