The Church of St James the Greater was built in 1675–1677; Čížkovice Castle was remodelled between 1658 and 1665. These two periods make Baroque architectural history a tangible theme for a stay. When planning, you can consider two questions together: Which architectural history interests you, and which rail connection suits your journey? Čížkovice is therefore about both specific buildings and rail connections at the railway station.

Church: construction period, tower and furnishings

The Church of St James the Greater complex is a protected cultural monument. The Baroque church was built in 1675–1677. The complex includes a freestanding bell tower and a statue of St Anthony of Padua. The tower probably dates from the 1670s. Inside the church is a painting depicting Count von Varensbach and his wife as aristocratic patrons, with a model of the future church. The image brings together the patrons’ role and the construction of the church. Thus, the construction period, the tower’s probable date and a specific pictorial motif sit side by side, without describing the same aspect of the church.

The castle and Baroque architectural forms

Čížkovice Castle is a two-storey Baroque building with three wings. “Three-winged” describes its division into three wings; “two-storey” indicates the number of floors. The castle was remodelled between 1658 and 1665; the Church of St James the Greater was built in 1675–1677. Both events took place in the second half of the 17th century, but they describe different building projects: remodelling the castle and constructing the church. For those interested in cultural history, the distinction lies precisely here: the dates belong to the same period, but not to the same phase of construction. The reconstruction of the castle was the architect Giulio Broggio’s first independent work.

The surviving castle park

A remnant of the castle park survives, displaying features of a landscaped park. The park’s development also included the renewal of its paths and park furnishings. The remaining park adds a different focus to the history of the town: architecture and construction work take centre stage at the church and castle, while the park is about the design of a landscaped area. A landscaped park is a park designed in a naturalistic style; this aspect broadens the view of local history beyond the buildings.

Travel by train and bus

Čížkovice railway station is on line 113 (Litoměřice–Lovosice–Most) and line 114 (Ústí nad Labem–Litoměřice horní nádraží–Postoloprty). Line 114 also has connections towards Žatec or Most. Both lines serve Most, but their other stops differ. The station is part of the integrated transport system; a bus stop for scheduled services is nearby. The station building or the shelter serving passengers is accessible to people with limited mobility. Check current timetables before travelling and, if needed, also check accessibility: transport services and facilities may change.
