Vineyards, historic cellars and a rocky viewpoint give Velké Žernoseky its distinctive character. You can explore the village through its winemaking history, discover its architecture or plan a walk through the vineyards to Calvary. A regional cycling route also passes through Velké Žernoseky.

Winemaking and the chateau

Žernosecké vinařství offers wine tastings in its cellars, salon or the chateau’s large hall. Arrangements may need to be made in advance. The vineyard sites bear the historic names Kostelní, Mariánská, Malá Vendule and Velká Vendule. These names give the local wine-growing landscape a specific sense of place.

The chateau is also connected with wine production: the early Baroque building was constructed for this purpose and expanded at the end of the 18th century. The fabric of the cellars beneath the chateau dates back at least to the 13th century. Thus, different layers of winemaking history meet in Velké Žernoseky, from the earliest cellars to the later-expanded chateau.

Church and vineyard cottages

The Gothic Church of St Nicholas was remodelled in the 16th century and forms a prominent landmark in the landscape. Its single-nave hall has a net vault; the chancel has a three-sided end, and a sacristy is attached on the north side. The tower dates from the 14th century and was remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style in 1881. The different construction phases can therefore be distinguished in individual parts of the church.

The group known as Viničné domky is also part of the wine-growing landscape: four vineyard cottages stand on terraces on the southwestern slope of Malá Vendule. They are part of Velké Žernoseky’s wine-growing ensemble and a characteristic landmark in the landscape. Their origins are probably Baroque at their core. Historical tradition dates the Hrádeker festival, with Pentecost services at the chapel on Hrádek, to 1818.

Hike to Calvary and cycling route

A green-marked hiking route leads from Velké Žernoseky through the vineyards to Calvary, also known as Tříkřížový vrch. The rocky outcrop, with three wooden crosses on its summit, is a prominent landmark in the Česká brána. Calvary is accessible without restrictions; by car, you can get to within 250 metres of the site. Check local access information before you travel.

On a trip from Velké Žernoseky, you can also watch a ferry carry passengers across the Elbe. For cyclists, the Labská stezka leads from Litoměřice to Velké Žernoseky and continues to Ústí nad Labem. It runs mostly along separate cycle paths or roads closed to motor traffic. Surface conditions and traffic arrangements may change, especially near the access roads to Velké Žernoseky; check conditions before setting off.

The hiking route leads to a specific landscape feature and passes through vineyards; the Labská stezka places the village on a longer cycling route between two cities. These offer different ways to include Velké Žernoseky in your stay: as a destination for an outing to Calvary or as part of a regional cycling tour.
