Třebušín can be explored through different periods of history and a range of interests: the oldest written mention of the village dates back to 1169, while the history of St. Nicholas Parish Church and Kalich Castle has its own dates and stories. There are also trails through the municipal area and a landscape that lies entirely within the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. For planning, it helps to consider history, hiking or cycling, and relaxation at Machčák Pond as separate priorities.
Kalich Castle, the Church and Local History
The dates mark different milestones, not a shared founding date: the oldest written record of Třebušín dates from 1169; St. Nicholas Parish Church is first mentioned in 1384. In 1421, Jan Žižka of Trocnov had Kalich Castle built after an earlier fortress had been captured. He named the castle after the chalice. The written record of the village, the church's history and the construction of the castle thus represent different chapters in the area's history.
The parish church was destroyed during the Hussite Wars and restored many years later. Together with its enclosing wall and gate, it is listed as a cultural monument in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments. The date 1384 marks its first mention; it should not be confused with its restoration. Those interested in architectural history can consider this long development alongside the more recent traces of construction.
The château in Třebušín is also a valuable local landmark. Renaissance structures have been preserved in the cellars and on the ground floor of the north wing. This is a specific architectural feature, distinct from the documented history of the church and the origins of Kalich. From Kalich Castle, there are views of Třebušín, Litoměřice and the Elbe Lowland. This view links the castle's history with a sense of orientation in the landscape, without treating the three places as a single attraction.
Landscape and Trails
The entire municipal area lies within the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. Its defining features include the unique relief of a volcanic mountain range formed in the Upper Tertiary, diverse geology, a rich variety of plant species and distinctive wildlife. These landscape features make for a different focus during your stay than architectural history: here, the natural environment takes precedence over individual historical dates.
The long-distance Zlatá stezka Zemí hradů trail passes through the municipal area, as do several cycling routes. When planning your visit, it is therefore worth considering hiking and cycling as separate options and checking specific route information for the trip you have in mind.
Getting There and Seasonal Bicycle Carriage
From 14 December 2025 to 12 December 2026, DÚK bus route 623 connects Bohušovice nad Ohří, Litoměřice, Třebušín, Lovečkovice and Verneřice. Check departure times in the current timetable before setting off. This is especially useful if you are planning your day around a specific connection.
Under the timetable valid until 12 December 2026, seasonal bicycle carriage on route 623 is available from 1 April to 29 October, with a maximum of 20 bicycles permitted. This arrangement may differ during other timetable periods. When planning a cycling trip, the dates and limited number of bicycle spaces are therefore just as important as deciding which of the several cycling routes to take.
Relaxing at Machčák and Choosing Your Stay
Machčák Pond lies south of Třebušín and is used for recreation. Swimming is possible at your own risk; check the current conditions on site. Alongside cultural and landscape-related activities, it offers a quieter option. The swimming advisory is relevant to planning your visit and should not be replaced by general assumptions about the pond.
When looking for a holiday rental, it may help to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to concentrate mainly on local history and architecture, plan walks through the municipal area, or include time to relax at Machčák? This question helps you organise your daily interests without assuming any particular accommodation or connection between the different places. Třebušín thus offers several distinct starting points for a stay: historical records with clearly differentiated dates, protected countryside with hiking and cycling routes, and the pond south of the village.
