A late Baroque castle and a renovated avenue with outdoor fitness equipment show two sides of Vrbičany: architectural and local history on the one hand, and exercise with a view of the Central Bohemian Uplands on the other. There is also art in the castle, a niche chapel and a cycling tour that includes a section leading to Vrbičany. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether cultural attractions or outdoor activities should shape your stay.
Castle, Art and Local History
Vrbičany’s late Baroque castle was built between 1786 and 1789. The rest of the building is single-storey, while the projecting central section has two storeys. The centre of the building therefore not only projects forward but also rises above the single-storey sections.
Paintings and prints by academic painter Vladimír Veselý are displayed in the castle. It also currently appears to house the largest exhibition of historical prams in the Czech Republic. The collection comprises more than 222 exhibits from the collections of Hanka Müllerová and Eva Vaněčková. Painting and prints are presented alongside a very different collection theme: historical prams. Check in advance whether the exhibitions are open on the day of your visit.
The castle probably stands on the site of a medieval fortress. It once had an English and a French park. Beside the castle is a gloriette, or garden pavilion. Vrbičany also has a Neoclassical niche chapel dating from the first half of the 19th century. These buildings and the history of the parks offer several points of interest for a culture-focused stay, from the castle itself and its possible medieval origins to the chapel in the village.
Plan Activities and Your Journey
The municipality of Vrbičany has renovated the avenue towards Tělohunt as far as the landfill and installed outdoor fitness equipment there. Visitors can exercise along the avenue while enjoying views of the Central Bohemian Uplands. This provides a specific option for outdoor activity as part of a trip that also takes in historic sites.
For cyclists, a 25.5-kilometre tour through Doksany and the surrounding area includes a 6-kilometre section leading to the municipality of Vrbičany, with just one gentle climb. The 6 kilometres refer to this section of the route, not to its total length. Keep this in mind when considering the gradient as part of your plans.
Two different starting points are given for the walk to the castle. From Chotěšov pod Házmburkem railway station, the official access route continues for another 4 kilometres on foot to the castle. By bus, travel to Vrbičany and then walk a further 600 metres. The walking distance therefore depends on whether you start at the railway station or in Vrbičany after travelling by bus. Check train and bus connections before your trip.
Visitors can try washing Bohemian garnets in the castle park. Check in advance whether this activity is available during your visit. When looking for a holiday apartment in Vrbičany, it helps to decide what you want to focus on: castle history and art, or exercise along the avenue and cycling. Then compare the location and amenities of the individual options with your own priorities.
