Trnovany combines an early documented history with traces of an old market road and an agricultural past. In the north, it also has a protected natural area.
Landscape in the North
The northern half of Trnovany lies within the CHKO ÄŚeskĂ© stĹ™edohořà Protected Landscape Area. There, woodland-steppe to steppe communities are designated as protected natural assets; the area is classified as Zone IV. The protected-area designation applies to the northern half, not to all of Trnovany. In the wider regional context, the area crossed by the Litoměřicko Wine Route is one of the richest in natural features and most attractive to tourists within the CHKO ÄŚeskĂ© stĹ™edohoĹ™Ă.
History and Agriculture
Trnovany is first documented in a charter from 1057, which confirms the founding of the Chapter of St. Stephen in Litoměřice. The earliest known reference to the village is therefore linked to a religious event in the town. Another historical connection is the old market road that ran through the valley between Trnovany and PodvinĂ, leading from Litoměřice to ÚštÄ›k. Litoměřice thus appears in two distinct roles: as the location of the chapter mentioned in the charter and as the starting point of the market road to ÚštÄ›k. PodvinĂ, as a village in the valley, is also part of this history of the route.
The fortress in Trnovany was burned down during the Thirty Years’ War; the former fortress was demolished around 1797. A fire in 1808 destroyed the last surviving parts of the former manor farm. The fire and the later demolition were therefore separate events; the 1808 fire affected the manor farm.
Historically, wine, fruit, hops and lentils were grown in Trnovany. The range of crops grown in the past was therefore broader than wine alone; a local vineyard gave its name to PraĹľská zahrada. Several rural buildings with timber-framed upper floors have been preserved in PodvinĂ. While the vineyard’s name recalls the agricultural past, the timber-framed upper floors add an architectural dimension.
Wine and Local Events
Wine is part of Trnovany’s story both historically and through local events. TrnovanskĂ© VinobranĂ is a regular local harvest festival where wines and Burčák from local vineyards, including those in Trnovany, are sampled. VĂtánĂ lĂ©ta is also held regularly as a local event. If you are planning your trip around a festival, check the specific event date in advance.
Points of Reference for Finding Accommodation
Two geographical points of reference can help you choose accommodation: Road I/15 runs through Trnovany and connects Litoměřice with ÄŚeská LĂpa; the Litoměřická Wine Route passes through Litoměřice, around four kilometres from Trnovany. If the wine route is central to your stay, include the town in your plans; if you are focusing on Trnovany, the village’s history, local events and northern natural area take centre stage.
