Sandstone towers, castles and museums give trips around Jičín District a variety of different focuses. The Prachov Rocks reach heights of up to 40 metres; in Jičín and the surrounding area, regional history, art and several periods of architecture are also in the spotlight. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you would rather focus on exhibitions, historical sightseeing routes, or landscapes and trails.
Museums, Fairy Tales and Castle History
The Municipal Museum Nová Paka devotes its permanent exhibitions to geological development, gemstones and volcanism, as well as local history, spiritualism and nativity scenes. The Regional Museum and Gallery in Jičín takes a broader view: it documents the cultural and natural assets, development and history of Jičín, the Jičín region and the southern part of the Český ráj Geopark. The museums therefore cover distinctly different themes, from natural history and collections to a regional overview. Jičín is also associated with the fairy tales of Václav Čtvrtek and the illustrations of Radek Pilař.
The castles also offer different historical highlights. Staré Hrady combines a 14th-century Gothic castle with a later Renaissance château. It offers historical and fairy-tale sightseeing routes, as well as a fairy-tale cellar with sound and lighting effects. At Kost Castle, four visitor tours cover the Kinský family, a medieval torture chamber, a combined route and a shortened route. At Dětenice, weapons associated with the Knights of Malta and furnished rooms with Baroque and Rococo interiors are part of the visit. Seasonal jousting tournaments add to the programme; as the tournament schedule may change, check the dates in advance.
Rocks, Valleys and Trails
At the Prachov Rocks, you will find well-maintained, marked loop trails, information panels and viewpoints. Route options of 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 kilometres are listed for orientation, along with a route designed for pushchairs. Car parks are close to the entrances. Routes and access may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before your visit. As a longer hiking option, the 16-kilometre Rumcajs Trail connects Jičín with Brada, Prachov and the Prachov Rocks. The shorter loop trails and this route therefore differ in their stated distance alone.
The Podtrosecká Valleys Nature Reserve offers a different landscape: wetlands with ponds and streams lie in ravines edged with sandstone. The area provides habitat for protected plant and animal species. The Mariánská Garden, in turn, is a Baroque landscape composition. Religious buildings are tucked away in forests and linked by old avenues and clearings. Here, the focus is not on rock formations, but on the design of the landscape and its buildings.
There are further options for trails starting in Jičín: marked hiking paths lead from the town up to Zebín. The road ends at Zebín Court, about one kilometre from the summit; from the top, you can see the Prachov Rocks, Trosky and other regional landmarks. A cycling loop through the Mariánská Garden starts and ends in Jičín and passes through Staré Hrady and Markvartice. Another route around Jičín links Valdštejnská Lodžie, Zebín and Milohlídka. Bus route 510 connects Jičín with the Prachov Rocks, the area around Sobotka and Kost; selected services carry bicycles. Seasonal timetable details and bicycle transport may change. Check the connection and bicycle arrangements before you travel.
Regional Experiences
The Dětenice visitor complex includes a brewery and a medieval tavern; there are also opportunities to sample regional specialities. Further afield in Český ráj, handcrafted goods and agricultural products such as pottery and honey represent the region’s product-making traditions. Together with the museums, castles and landscapes described above, they offer a range of themes to consider when planning your trip, without having to fit every attraction into one itinerary.
