A place with several layers of history

If you are looking for holiday accommodation for a culturally focused stay, Ubislavice offers a clear theme: local history is reflected in the church and surviving architectural forms, as well as in art and memorial sites. The time span reaches from the Middle Ages to a sculpture group created in 2015. This makes the place interesting for travellers who want to explore architectural history, traditional forms and more recent art together in one destination.

The church and its historical use

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Úbislavice is a listed immovable cultural monument. Originally, it was a Gothic church dating from the 14th century; it was later remodelled in the Baroque style. Its original construction phase and later alterations can therefore be compared in a single building—a tangible point of reference for anyone interested in historic architecture.

Grain was milled in the log mill, No. 56, near the church from the beginning of the 15th century until 1920. This long period offers a different perspective on local history from the church: here, the focus is on grain processing, while there it is on the development of a religious building. The comparison raises two different questions: How did the church change, and for how long was the mill used?

Surviving architectural forms and the regional setting

Several log houses, as well as numerous statues and crosses, have been preserved in Úbislavice. This takes the focus beyond the church to other buildings and landmarks in the village. Since October 2005, Úbislavice has been part of the Český ráj European Geopark, under the auspices of UNESCO. This designation adds a regional landscape dimension to the local history. If you consider cultural and landscape themes together when choosing a place to stay, this connection may factor into your decision.

Sculpture and memorial site

The “Spolu” sculpture group stands along the path from the church in Úbislavice to Zboží. Students from VŠUP and AVU in Prague created it in 2015. Its location on this named path and the year it was created place it as a more recent artistic feature alongside the older history of the church and mill. A description from June 2024 mentions the restored U Jána memorial site, with a newly forged cross, a bench and an information board. For “Spolu,” the focus is on its creation date and creators; for U Jána, it is on the restoration and the memorial site's features.

Archaeological interpretations and a dated competition

In 1939, three pits containing medieval pottery were reported near houses No. 29 and 31 in Úbislavice. Their interpretation is not certain: they may have been a pottery kiln with associated structures, or a furnace used for ironworking. These two interpretations lead to different ideas about how the site was used at the time—from pottery production to iron processing. Unlike the church, whose original Gothic and later Baroque phases are identified, two possible interpretations remain in consideration here.

The night firefighting competition at the Úbislavice sports ground was held for the 16th time on 6 September 2025. If you would like to attend a future edition, check the date for the relevant year. This keeps the date of this edition clear and avoids mistaking it for a date in another year.
