Bašnice combines Bašnický les west of the village with notable memorial sites and the “Zámecká cyklotrasa Hořice,” which runs through the village. This gives you two distinct focuses for planning your trip: local history and nature, or a cycling route with clearly named sections. When making your choice, you can consider whether the village’s history or the route of the cycling trail is the deciding factor.
Forest and Regional Context
Bašnický les lies west of Bašnice and was designated a natural monument in 1990. The forest contains Slavic burial mounds from the 9th century, which have been proposed for inclusion on the national heritage list. If you plan to visit the forest, check local access conditions beforehand. This natural area therefore combines a protected landscape with a specific historical theme.
Bašnice is located in the Podchlumí microregion. There, sandstone deposits shaped local architecture and provided a livelihood for the stonemasons and sculptors who worked in the area. This regional background adds a regional perspective on building culture and craftsmanship to the consideration of individual memorial sites.
History and Memorial Sites
The first record of the former fortress of Bašnice dates from 1499. When Bašnice was purchased in 1542, the fortress had already been abandoned; it has not survived. According to tradition, it was located near the bridge over the Bašnický potok and not far from the bell tower.
At the eastern edge of Bašnice, a stone cross on a pillar stands at the junction towards Milovice u Hořic. It dates from 1767 and was restored in 2009. In the village centre, a monument on an open plot commemorates those who fell in the First World War; it is located at the junction towards Bříšťany. The monument is dated 1928, the granite plaque dates from 1921, and restoration took place in 2009. Both restorations took place in 2009; for the memorial to the fallen, the year of the monument and that of the granite plaque differ.
Cycling Through Bašnice
The “Zámecká cyklotrasa Hořice” runs through Bašnice between Milovice and Dobrá Voda u Hořic. The route follows paved roads. Trekking bikes are suitable; road bikes may also be suitable. This distinction is useful if you plan to ride a particular type of bike: if you are using a road bike, check the latest cycling information before setting off. Both the route and the surface information may change.
Local Facilities
The public playground near the Sokolovna is intended for children aged three to twelve and was built in 2013. Check the current rules of use and operating conditions before visiting. Borrowing books from the Bašnice library is free; if you plan to use it, check the current service conditions in advance.
