From the village square in Ohaveč, the view stretches to the Velišský hřbet and down to the Ostruženské rybníky. These two perspectives show that the village can be explored through both its landscape and its long history of settlement. There is also a protected memorial tree and a natural monument with ponds, reed beds and wet meadows. If you are choosing between historical and nature-focused destinations, Ohaveč offers specific points of interest for both.

Village Square and Getting Your Bearings

On the drive from Sobotka to Jičín, the road passes through Ohaveč; the charming village square lies a few dozen metres to the south. To get your bearings, distinguish between the through road and the square to the south. From the square, you can look towards the Velišský hřbet and down to the Ostruženské rybníky. The two views lead to different points of reference: a named ridge and a natural monument comprising several ponds.

Ostruženské rybníky: Ponds and Wet Meadows

The Ostruženské rybníky natural monument lies within the cadastral areas of Březina, Ohaveč and Ostružno. Ohaveč is therefore one of the three named areas; the protected area extends beyond the landscape visible from the village square. It encompasses the Ostruženský, Turecká and Čeperka ponds, reed beds and adjoining wet meadows. It is one of the most important ornithological areas in the Královéhradecký Region. This allows you to distinguish views of individual ponds from the regional significance of the natural monument as a whole.

The Protected Ohavečská Lípa

The Ohavečská lípa adds a single natural feature to this landscape. It is designated as a protected memorial tree and was first given protected status on 21 May 2008. The date marks the start of its protection, not its age. Together with the Ostruženské rybníky natural monument, it illustrates two different scales: a single named tree and a protected area encompassing several ponds and wetlands.

From Early Settlement to Medieval Record

The area around Ohaveč was already settled in the 6th to 5th millennium BC and formed part of the settlement area of the nearby Prachovské skály. Archaeological investigations in the area uncovered at least 90 features, including huts and pits, as well as numerous stone tools and pottery sherds. The medieval village of Ohaveč is first mentioned in 1327—considerably later than the initial settlement of the area. Before 1487, Ohaveč was incorporated into the expanding Veliš estate of the Trčka of Lípa family. In 1622, under Albrecht von Wallenstein, Ohaveč became part of the Duchy of Friedland. These details represent different historical layers: prehistoric settlement, the first mention of the medieval village and later changes in its affiliation.
