Vitiněves combines an early history with religious statues, preserved farmsteads and clearly identified waterways. The Cidlina flows north through the municipal area; near Vitiněves, the Úlibický potok flows into it.
From the First Mention to the Jesuit Period
Vitiněves was first mentioned in 1345. The name of the village is probably derived from Vít or Vitín. Its history of ownership dates back to the early 17th century: from 1623 to 1627, the village belonged to Albrecht von Wallenstein. He then gave Vitiněves to the Jesuits, whom he had invited to Jičín after the Battle of White Mountain. In 1626, the Jesuit Father Mathiates came to Vitiněves accompanied by 14 musketeers. This date falls within Wallenstein’s period of ownership; the transfer to the Jesuits took place later. This places the first mention and the history of ownership and religious orders in their distinct chronological contexts.
Statues and Farmsteads
The statue of the guardian angel in the village square dates from 1869 and was restored in 1993. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk behind the bridge over the Cidlina was also restored in 1993; it is listed as a cultural monument. Their shared restoration year allows for a direct comparison, while their dates of origin and monument status provide different historical points of reference.
Several large, traditional farmsteads have been preserved in Vitiněves. They complement the religious statues by offering a different perspective on local architectural culture. For travellers interested in rural architecture, the farmsteads provide a distinct topic alongside the religious figures.
A Cross with Its Own History
At the spot where a musketeer was killed, the Jesuits first erected a wooden cross and later an iron cross on a stone base. The sequence of materials distinguishes the original form from the later version: first wood, then iron on stone. The cross therefore has a different historical context from the statues: its location is associated with the death of a musketeer, while the restoration, year of origin and monument status provide specific points of reference for the statues.
The Cidlina, Its Tributary and the Road Connection
The Cidlina is the most important watercourse in the municipal area and flows north there. Near Vitiněves, the Úlibický potok flows into the Cidlina. These details describe different spatial relationships: the Cidlina flows through the municipal area, while the confluence places the Úlibický potok near Vitiněves. A bridge over the Cidlina lies on the road connecting Vitiněves with Malá Strana. The river’s northward course, its tributary and the road connection thus serve as distinct points of orientation.
