A stay in Sběř can be planned around three specific themes: nature, cultural history and transport links. The marked Češov–Vysoké Veselí nature trail passes through Sběř and Velešice; Sběřský Pond, historic buildings and remnants of the former railway embankment offer additional perspectives.
Water and Nature
Sběřský Pond is the most significant body of water in the Sběř planning area. In the Sběř cadastral area, it forms a local biocentre on the Kozojedský Brook, with well-developed aquatic and waterside communities in a wet meadow. This means that the water body, its connection to the brook and the wet waterside habitat are all specific nature themes for your stay. The “Javorka a Cidlina – Sběř” Nature Monument covers 272.8765 hectares and was first designated on 9 June 2014. The nature themes therefore differ in scale: the local biocentre is the focus at the pond, while the Nature Monument focuses on its designated area.
Nature Trail and Cultural History
The marked Češov–Vysoké Veselí nature trail passes through Sběř and Velešice. In Sběř, there is a column with a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, listed as a cultural monument. In Velešice, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is located within the Sběř area and is a listed immovable cultural monument. The route through both villages and the status of the individual cultural monuments can thus be considered as distinct planning priorities.
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Velešice was built before 1355. Its presbytery was rebuilt in 1581, and Jan Baptista Vlach built the nave in 1611. These dates relate to different construction phases and show that the building’s history spans several periods. The church contains historic sandstone and marble epitaphs, including one with the mortal remains of Mikuláš Bořek Dohalský z Dohalic. The construction chronology and epitaphs thus offer two different ways to explore the church’s history. The presbytery is the chancel area by the altar; the nave is the main space for the congregation. The terms therefore refer to different parts of the building.
Transport and Events
Remnants of the railway embankment from the former Smidary–Vysoké Veselí railway line remain in Sběř. Trains ran on the line from 1881 to 1976. For present-day regional planning, IREDO buses are a separate transport consideration: they serve the Sběř area, with connections to Jičín and Vysoké Veselí guaranteed.
The local public library is also part of everyday cultural life in Sběř: it regularly supplements and renews its permanent collection with books from the exchange collection of the Václav Čtvrtek Library in Jičín. Summer film screenings took place in 2024 and 2025; a screening is announced for 2026. Check the municipal calendar for the specific date.
