Those looking to combine nature and rural architectural heritage in Kněžnice will find several distinct highlights. The cadastral area extends into the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area. From Kněžnice, the view opens to the west across large parts of Český ráj, with Trosky Castle as a distinctive landmark. The Cidlinský hřeben Nature Monument lies north of the village. Religious monuments and a historic farmstead add to the area's attractions. When planning your trip, you can choose how much emphasis to place on the landscape, hiking and local cultural heritage.

Landscape and Nature

Cidlinský hřeben is an important geological site in the Český ráj UNESCO Global Geopark. As a protected woodland complex, it is also home to a significant herb layer and the largest population of wood ants in the Podkrkonoší area. Its geological significance is just one aspect of the nature monument: the herb layer and wood ants add a biological perspective. The geographical connections also differ: the cadastral area of Kněžnice extends into the protected landscape area, while Cidlinský hřeben lies north of the village.

Hiking and Views

Kněžnice is a good starting point for hikes. The view to the west offers a different perspective from the ridge to the north: it stretches across large parts of Český ráj and includes Trosky Castle as a distinctive landmark. When planning, you can decide whether hiking or the expansive view is the main reason for your outing. Český ráj features in two contexts here: as the landscape in the western panorama and as the UNESCO Global Geopark in which Cidlinský hřeben is geologically significant.

Local History and Monuments

The first written mention of Kněžnice dates to 1376 and appears in the court book of the town of Jičín. Monuments of local significance include the statue of the Virgin Mary and the roadside shrines known as “Boží Muka.” Another precisely dated work is the crucifix on a pedestal: a local stonemason created it in 1801 as a valuable early Neoclassical stone sculpture, but did not sign it. It stands on the main road near the municipal office. The dates mark two different things: 1376 is the first written mention of the village, while 1801 is the year a single work of art was created.

Rural Architectural Heritage

The farmstead at Kněžnice No. 66 adds another perspective on local history to the religious monuments: it represents agricultural architecture. It is a large agricultural farmstead with a three-sided courtyard. It was extensively remodelled in the late 19th century and illustrates one way agricultural farmsteads developed after the abolition of the robot, or corvée labour. The three-sided courtyard makes the layout of the complex easy to understand, while the remodelling points to a later phase in its history.
