Podůlší lies on the eastern side of Brada Hill. The road from Jičín to Turnov divides Podůlší into Horní Podůlší and Dolní Podůlší. This division offers a practical way to orient yourself in the village’s history: the statue of the Holy Trinity is in Dolní Podůlší, while the “Battle of Jičín” educational trail passes through Podůlší. Cultural history, routes, and sport are distinct points of interest that you can consider separately when planning your stay.

Cultural History in Podůlší

A statue of the Holy Trinity stands in Dolní Podůlší and is considered an important cultural monument. The Battle of Podůlší on June 29, 1866, is another historical point of reference. The Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 48 and units of the Austrian Poschacher Brigade clashed there. These included the II Battalion, three companies of the Imperial and Royal 34th Infantry Regiment, and one company of the Imperial and Royal 30th Infantry Regiment. The date and precise names of the units make the historical connection concrete, without requiring detailed prior knowledge of military history.

Another way to explore the village’s history is through the Podůlší theatre curtain from 1927. In the background, it depicts the village with Brada, a hill, and a small church; Svatopluk Čech, patron of the theatre association, is also shown. The image thus combines a portrayal of the village with a portrait of the association’s patron. The curtain was restored and declared a cultural monument in 1994. Together with the statue, it illustrates two different forms of cultural heritage: a monument in Dolní Podůlší and a historic curtain featuring motifs from the village and its theatre association.

Distinguishing the Educational Trail from the Cycle Route

The “Battle of Jičín” educational trail passes through Podůlší and is 29 km long. It has 22 stops and 26 information panels. These figures describe different aspects: the distance refers to the length of the trail, while the stops and panels structure how information is presented. Since the route passes through Podůlší, the stretch through the village should not be confused with the trail’s full length.

Cycle Route No. 4016 also passes through Podůlší. It is a separate point of reference and should not be confused with the 29 km educational trail: that length applies to the trail. Conditions on both routes may change, so check the latest route information before setting out.

Sport as a Separate Focus for Your Stay

The multi-purpose sports court in Podůlší can be used for tennis, volleyball, nohejbal, handball, small-sided football, floorball, basketball, and badminton. The options range from racket and team sports to games played on a smaller football pitch. The court can be reserved for periods of at least 60 and no more than 180 minutes. As the sports on offer and reservation conditions may change, check in advance which activities and time slots are currently available.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh these topics as distinct priorities: cultural history, including the statue and curtain; the historical educational trail; or the facilities at the sports court. This makes it easier to decide whether Podůlší suits the kind of stay you have in mind, without conflating information about individual routes or places.
