Podhradí U Jičína lies on the slopes of Veliš. For a stay focused on cultural history, the village offers several specific points of interest: the Loreto Chapel near Podhradí, the Krista Pantokratora (Eupatora) ensemble, the Chapel of the Guardian Angels, and the Boží muka on the southern slopes of Veliš. An international cycle route also passes through Podhradí. This offers a choice of different themes: sacred architecture and art history, or a regional cycling connection.
Baroque Landscape and Architecture
The Loreto Chapel near Podhradí was built in 1694 to a design by Jean Baptiste Mathey. It is an integral part of Mariánská zahrada, a unified Baroque landscape composition that František Josef Schlik had created in stages. Its architectural history is thus connected with a wider landscape-design concept that took shape over several stages. Both Mathey’s design and Schlik’s long-term composition are relevant to understanding the chapel.
A roof hatch and a roof that can be walked across in its entirety are among the Loreto’s distinctive features. From there, the view extends across the former Schlik estate and the Jičín Basin. This architectural detail and the described landscape view add a spatial perspective to the chapel’s history.
Another Baroque building in Podhradí is the Chapel of the Guardian Angels. Built in 1720, it is a hexagonal structure covered by a dome; the design is probably attributed to J. Santini. The chapel was intended to be open to the public for liturgical events and by request. Before visiting, check whether this option is available for your date. Unlike the Loreto, both the building’s form and the explicitly tentative attribution of its design are important to understanding it.
Sacred Art and Castle Remains
The Krista Pantokratora (Eupatora) ensemble in Podhradí is a significant late Baroque work of sculpture in the region, by an unknown artist. It is listed as an immovable cultural monument in the Central List of Cultural Monuments. Alongside the chapels, the ensemble offers a glimpse into another area of Baroque art: sculpture and its status as a monument.
The Boží muka on the southern slopes of Veliš are among the oldest monuments of their kind in the region. They are partly overgrown. These monuments complement the architectural examples with another form of religious remembrance in the landscape.
The Veliš archaeological site is near Jičín, on a prominent basalt hill, and preserves the ruins of a castle. Parts of the enclosure, the remains of two buildings, and a very deep well have survived. These individual surviving features give a clear picture of the traces left by the castle complex. This site thus differs from Podhradí’s Baroque sacred buildings and sculptural ensemble: here, the focus is on the castle remains atop the basalt hill.
Podhradí on the Cycle Route
International Cycle Route No. 14 (Berlin–Prague) connects Jičín with Dětenice and runs through Podhradí and Veliš. For cyclists, it is a specific regional connection and a different option from a stay focused on architectural monuments. Check the route before setting off.
