A rectangular market square, a church with a long history, and trails leading to Ostroměř railway station give Mlázovice several points of interest for a stay. The town combines a clearly legible historic character with the landscapes and trails of Mlázovice and its district of Mezihoří.
Market Square and Local History
The square in Mlázovice has a regular rectangular layout dating from 1540. At that time, the town was granted market-town status, along with the right to hold fairs and a coat of arms. This connection between the square’s layout and market rights leads directly into the history of the town centre. Information panels on many houses provide details about the history of Mlázovice and the individual buildings. This allows you to see not only the square but also the houses as part of the town’s history.
Two memorials from different periods stand in the square: a Marian column from the Hořice School of Sculpture was erected there in 1901, and an obelisk commemorating the victims of the First World War was added in 1928. The two monuments mark different historical moments, while the rectangular square recalls the town’s market history.
The Church of the Holy Trinity
The Church of the Holy Trinity is a state-recognised monument. It was rebuilt in 1725 on the site of a wooden church first mentioned in 1360. Its long history can also be traced through details of its furnishings: the church’s largest bell was cast in 1593, and its clock comes from the dissolved Pavlánů Monastery in Nová Paka. Today, the church is a branch church; it was formerly a parish church.
These details offer different points of reference for the town’s history, from the early mention of the wooden church to the bell and the 18th-century rebuilding. Together with the panels on many houses and the monuments in the square, they provide a way to explore the town’s history that is not tied to a single building.
The Peat Spa and Its Former Spa Tradition
The former spa tradition is also part of Mlázovice’s history. The area around the town once had twelve iron-rich springs and peat deposits associated with this tradition. The peat spa operated under constant medical supervision from 1898. It was closed in 1953 as part of a reorganisation of the healthcare system.
After the peat spa closed, its buildings took on a different function: the bathing facilities, including the hotel and guesthouse, became the basis for a social care facility for older people. The buildings’ changing uses are therefore also part of the town’s history. The hotel and guesthouse’s earlier history forms part of the peat spa’s past.
Landscape and Trails
Mlázovice lies on the western edge of the Podzvičinsko Basin, on the ridges of Chlumy, Mlázovický Chlum, and Hořický Chlum. One clearly described walking route starts in Mlázovice: the blue-marked trail leads to Záduší, crosses the red ridge trail near Mount Maxinec, and continues to Ostroměř railway station. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting out.
Another option is to explore the trails in Mezihoří, a district of the market town of Mlázovice. The district is surrounded by deep forests crossed by the Javorka River, and several walking trails pass through Mezihoří. The area is visited by walkers and cyclists. This gives you two different options: a single walking route with a described course to the railway station, or several trails in a wooded district.
Getting Around and Practical Planning
Several bus routes run through Mlázovice. Check the current timetable before travelling, as transport services may change. For finding your way around town, the information panels on many houses may be helpful: they provide information about local history and individual buildings.
The modernised swimming pool complex in Mlázovice offers changing rooms, sanitary facilities, an outdoor shower, and areas for relaxation and small-scale food and drink services. Check which facilities are open before visiting. This lets you plan around current conditions without treating the historical walk, the trails in the countryside, and a visit to the swimming pool complex as the same experience.
