Three perspectives are useful for getting your bearings in Soberaz: its location at the eastern edge of the UNESCO Český ráj Geopark, local historical landmarks, and two different route connections. This makes it possible to understand the village both in terms of its landscape and its architectural and commemorative heritage.
Location and Getting There
The entire cadastral area of Soberaz lies at the eastern edge of the UNESCO Český ráj Geopark. The Geopark designation therefore applies to the cadastral area as a whole. The quickest way to reach Soberaz is via a turn-off from the Jičín–Lomnice nad Popelkou road between Valdice and Železnice. The location and route details provide two different points of reference: the landscape setting and the way to get there.
Local History and Architectural Heritage
The first written mention of Soberaz dates back to 1362 and appears in the court book of the town of Jičín. The Chapel of Saints Peter and Paul marks a different point in history: the Carthusians from Valdice built it in 1717. The first date relates to the written record of the village, while the second relates to the chapel’s construction history.
In the western part of Soberaz stands rural house No. 35, an example of woodcarving and folk architecture from the late 18th century. Folk architecture refers to rural building; in the case of No. 35, woodcarving is an additional decorative feature. House No. 39 in Soberaz is a protected cultural monument. House No. 35 is notable for its architectural classification, while No. 39 is notable for its protected status.
A statue of the Virgin Mary in Soberaz dates from 1870. The monument in front of the local cemetery commemorates the Hussite past and those who fell in the First World War. The statue is dated by its year; the monument focuses on two historical contexts. Together with the chapel and houses, these memorials add to the village’s different historical and cultural associations.
Hiking Trail and Historical Educational Trail
A blue-marked hiking trail runs through the cadastral area of Soberaz. As trail markings can change, check the current route markings before setting out. The educational trail “Po stopách války roku 1866 na Hořicku” is a separate route, and Soberaz is one of the participating municipalities. The two routes differ in nature: the hiking trail is described as running through the cadastral area, while the educational trail focuses on the historical events of 1866 in the Hořicko region. When planning, it is therefore helpful to consider whether you would rather follow the hiking trail or explore the historical theme.
Choosing Soberaz as a Place to Stay
When choosing where to stay, you can first decide whether you are most interested in Soberaz for its landscape, architectural history, or a hiking or historical trail. The Geopark setting provides the landscape context, while the local landmarks and routes appeal to other interests. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, this can help you decide which aspect best suits your trip.
