The Hradec Králové Region combines rock cities, historic sights, cultural events and spa towns. For your trip to Hradec Králové, you can focus on different themes: mountain scenery and trails, cycling routes, or history and culture. The places and activities below offer some specific ideas.
Mountains, trails and rock formations
The eastern part of Krkonoše National Park accounts for 65 percent of the park’s area and includes areas in 16 municipalities. The Krkonoše area has around 800 kilometres of marked summer and winter hiking trails, as well as about 500 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails. More than 400 kilometres of official cycling routes are also designated within the national park. Hiking, cross-country skiing and cycling offer different ways to explore the area. Trail maintenance and protected-area rules may change; check the latest information before setting out.
At 1,603 metres, Sněžka is the highest mountain in the Czech Republic. You can reach the summit by several routes or by cable car. At the top are the Chapel of St. Lawrence and the Anežka Post Office, described as the highest building in the Czech Republic. Facilities at the summit may operate seasonally, so check visiting options in advance.
The Adršpach-Teplice Rocks offer a distinctive landscape of their own, with narrow gorges, tall rock towers and caves. Adršpach railway station is right by the entrance to the rock park. Check train timetables separately when planning your visit. Cycling routes lead directly to the rocks; bicycle parking is available near the entrance, but you should check its availability before travelling. One of the cycling routes is suitable for children and can be shortened by taking the train back from Teplice.
Cycling and nature by the water
The Rozkoš Cycling Circuit is around 19 kilometres long and links communities around the Rozkoš Reservoir. The circuit officially opened on 8 June 2026. Its facilities include rest areas, shelters, service stations, bicycle stands and e-bike charging stations; this infrastructure was reported as completed in 2026. The approximate route length and the type of facilities can help you assess the circuit as a standalone cycling trip.
Several hundred plant and animal species live in and around the Orlice, including around 120 protected species. Nature lovers can find a different perspective here than on the marked mountain trails: the focus is on the river’s biodiversity and protected species. The main ridge of the Orlické Mountains offers further opportunities for hiking and cycling; the Jirásek Trail combines nature with military history.
Historic places and culture
Kuks Hospital is a Baroque complex with a Church of the Holy Trinity, the Sporck family crypt, sculptures by Braun, a Baroque pharmacy, a monastery garden and a sculpture lapidarium. Seasonal opening hours are part of planning your visit. In Hradec Králové, the historic centre includes the White Tower and the Gothic Church of the Holy Spirit, as well as architecture associated with Josef Gočár. The city is also a cultural hub of the Hradec Králové Region, with events including Rock for People, a jazz festival and exhibitions. Festival programmes change, so it is worth checking the relevant dates before your visit.
The Hradec Králové City Forests complement the urban attractions with dozens of kilometres of trails for walkers and cyclists, educational trails and rest pavilions. The Veselý Kopec Open-Air Museum offers another way to explore regional architecture and craftsmanship: it features traditional folk architecture, historic cottages and mills, and demonstrations of old crafts. Individual demonstrations may vary.
Regional specialities and planning your trip
Regional dishes include Krkonoše kyselo, a soup made with sauerkraut and potatoes, and Krkonošské trubičky, filled with nuts and honey. Other specialities include Trutnov gingerbread, Krkonoše sausages and East Bohemian bramborák, seasoned with garlic and marjoram. If you would like to combine an activity with local food and drink, the 35-kilometre Krkonoše Beer Trail pairs mountain hiking with tastings at local microbreweries.
Regional tourist and cycling bus services complement year-round bus and train connections, linking visitors with nature destinations, historic places and lesser-known spots in the Hradec Králové Region. The journey from Prague to Hradec Králové is estimated to take around 90 to 120 minutes by bus or train. Actual journey times depend on the timetable and traffic conditions.
