Úlibice brings together an early history as a parish church, traces of a former fortress and the Úlibická bažantnice. The local landmarks tell different stories: the first mention of the parish church and the construction of the present building are far apart in time; at the northern edge, there is a reconciliation cross and a monument dating from 1767. The protected woodland, in turn, is defined by its habitat and its location away from marked trails. When choosing Úlibice for a stay, you can therefore decide in advance whether to focus on local history or the landscape.

Church and historical timeline

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is a prominent historical landmark. The present church was built from 1712 to 1716. A description of the Diocese of Prague from 1344 to 1350 already mentions it as a parish church; this early date refers to the first mention of the parish, not to the construction of the present building. The church has been a protected monument since 7 February 1994. The early mention, the construction period and the later protected status are thus three distinct milestones in the history of the village.

Historical traces in the village

Traces of a former fortress can still be seen on a hill near the church. This site adds another historical point of reference to the story of the church building: the visible traces are those of an earlier fortification. There is also a reconciliation cross at the northern edge of Úlibice. Boží muka u Úlibic, a landscape-defining feature dating from 1767, is also located there. A description updated on 5 March 2012 notes that Boží muka u Úlibic offers a view over part of Český ráj. These landmarks bring together different historical and landscape features, without telling the same story.

The Úlibická bažantnice

The Úlibická bažantnice is a nature reserve, first designated on 4 July 1956. It is a surviving remnant of a hardwood floodplain forest in the area between Polabí and Podkrkonoší. Its protected status and forest type give the area a distinct natural character, different from that of the church and the historical traces. When deciding what to focus on, you can therefore distinguish between local history and landscape conservation.

At the time, the Úlibická bažantnice lay away from all marked hiking and cycling trails and was not used for recreation or sport; local access conditions may change. Therefore, do not assume that the area can be included as a recreational or sporting stop. If you are considering a visit, check the current access conditions beforehand.

Planning routes and getting there

A description updated on 30 June 2014 does not mention any marked hiking route through Úlibice. It lists the roads from Jičín towards Nová Paka or Hořice as the easiest way to get there. This raises two separate planning questions: walking routes and getting there via the roads mentioned. Check current route and road conditions before travelling.
