Meadows in the valley, the wooded Chlum hills and traces of local history give Lukavec u Hořic a varied character. The Byšičky natural area shapes the landscape; in the village, a cross, a stone monument and older log houses tell the story of local history.

A natural area between valley and forest

Lukavec u Hořic lies in a meadow-filled valley at the northern foot of the wooded Chlum hills and is surrounded by forests on three sides. The Byšičky Nature Monument covers the village’s cadastral area. The valley, meadows and forest edge are the defining landscape features of the village.

Most of the Byšičky complex consists of forest stands with varied, partly natural compositions. Several ponds and unique peat meadows in the flood zone adjoin them. In a predominantly agricultural landscape, the entire complex is an important biocentre. The forest, bodies of water and wet meadows thus create a distinct contrast with the surroundings.

The Lukavecký stream, also known as Lukava, Lukavec and Lukavý, flows through Lukavec u Hořic. It rises at Osmik Pond near the Byšičky forester’s lodge. The stream running through the village and the pond at its source provide two specific points of reference in the landscape.

Local history and architectural traces

Lukavec was founded in the first half of the 13th century. The original village included a manor farm, three to five farmsteads and a fortress. These early features show that the village’s history is not evident only in individual monuments built later: its recorded founding date alone connects Lukavec with a long history of settlement.

The former fortress was demolished in the 18th century. It probably stood near today’s house No. 44. Changes in the terrain from former defensive ditches and ramparts remain from its original layout.

A stone monument bearing the names of the fallen was erected in 1922 on a rise in the village centre. It stands beside the Lukavecký Cross, opposite the municipal building: the cross was erected in 1844 and restored in 1880 and 1896. The two memorials therefore differ both in age and in their documented histories.

Some log houses in Lukavec u Hořic date from the late 18th or early 19th century. They complement the monuments with examples of older residential buildings. Taken together, the cross, monument, log houses and probable fortress site offer various points of reference for understanding the village’s history.

Leisure and practical information

The second edition of a competition for the best homemade sauerkraut took place at the Lukavecké zelobraní on 6 March 2026 at the Lucerna restaurant.

Lukavec has a bathing spot in a fire pond. Entry and swimming are at your own risk; check local conditions before using it. This important caveat remains part of your planning if swimming is relevant to your trip.

Cycle route No. 4135 also passes through Lukavec u Hořic. Check the current route signs before setting off. The cycle route offers another way to explore the municipality, while Byšičky is primarily a natural area and the village’s architectural monuments reveal its history.

If you are considering Lukavec u Hořic as a destination when looking for a holiday rental, the landscape and local history offer two specific focuses for your decision: Byšičky with its forest, ponds and peat meadows, or the historic traces found throughout the village. Those interested in both will also find different themes here, without needing to combine them into a fixed itinerary.
