When looking for a holiday apartment in Budčeves, two themes can help guide your choice: protected pond and forest habitats, and local history. The nature-related highlights include waterbirds, amphibians, meadows and woodland communities. Historical topics range from the school and statue to former ponds. This can help you decide whether natural heritage or local history should play a bigger part in your stay.

Pond Landscape and Protected Areas

Rybník Kojetín Pond is part of the natural monument of the same name and the Rožďalovické rybníky Natura 2000 bird protection area (CZ20211010). It is a valuable habitat, particularly for waterbirds and amphibians, and is also an important ornithological area. The bird protection area protects populations of the Western marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus) and common crane (Grus grus), as well as their habitats. Its cadastral areas include Budčeves and Nečas.

Perna is a Site of Community Importance; the listed cadastral areas include Běchary, Budčeves and Nečas. The area encompasses extensively mown lowland meadows reaching into the foothills, as well as a very well-preserved complex of Hercynian oak-hornbeam forests. The nature themes thus offer different highlights: Rybník Kojetín represents wetland habitats and birdlife, while Perna is known for its meadows and forest.

Local History and Historical Traces

The school in Budčeves was founded in 1819; the school building was used as a school until 1977. The layout of the settlement also has a historical interpretation: its circular shape is associated with the ancient Czech origins of the place. The name Budčeves derives from the original owner of the fortress and manor farm, who was called Budka or Budče.

The statue of the Immaculate Conception of Mary stands on the village green in Budčeves, beside the road leading towards Kopidlno. The late Baroque artwork was created by an unknown sculptor. The Turyně fortress in Budčeves no longer survives: it later disappeared when an agricultural building, used as a cowshed, was constructed.

Former ponds are also part of the local and landscape history. The settlement of Nečas was founded in 1780 on a drained pond. A large pond once occupied the field known as Pobočník. Local tradition offers another kind of historical interpretation for Perna Forest: it is described as the burial place of ancestors from ancient times. The suggestion that it may have been a sacred grove named after the Slavic god Perun remains another possibility. Nečas represents the founding of a settlement on a drained pond; a large pond once lay in a field at Pobočník.
