Železnice combines a distinctive historic townscape with a museum and trails in the surrounding area. You can therefore choose from different ways to make the most of your stay: the town’s architectural history is on display, while hiking trails and cycling routes draw your attention to the surrounding area, both near and far. The exhibitions also offer a range of perspectives—from archaeology and palaeontology to the history of 1866. You can tailor your hotel search to the experiences that interest you most.
A town with a Neoclassical townscape
The historic centre of Železnice was declared an urban heritage conservation zone in 1990. After the great fire of 1826, the town was rebuilt in a unified Neoclassical style according to plans by the master builder Jan Hertner. Much of this development has been preserved, forming a unique urban ensemble from the Empire period. Those interested in architecture can encounter the town’s history not only in individual exhibitions, but also in its preserved townscape.
The Church of St Giles is an important landmark. It was first mentioned in writing in the 13th century and was remodelled in the Baroque style between 1727 and 1739. Original Romanesque ashlar blocks were used in the church tower. The church therefore reflects several distinct building phases. Other cultural monuments in Železnice include the town hall on Svobody Square and the Oldřich Prášil Mill.
Museum, exhibitions and hands-on activities
The Vlastivědné muzeum a galerie v Železnici (Museum of Local History and Art Gallery in Železnice) is housed in an Empire-style building dating from 1816, next to the Church of St Giles. Its exhibitions extend beyond the town’s architecture: the archaeology exhibition reaches back to the Neolithic, while the palaeontology exhibition covers the Palaeozoic. Another exhibition is devoted to the Austro-Prussian Battle of 1866, fought in the fields near Železnice.
At the Roubená chalupa (Log Cabin), visitors can try spinning on a spinning wheel and watch weaving demonstrations. Demonstrations and the opportunity to take part are included in the visitor programme; specific arrangements may vary. The interior of the cabin is accessible to visitors with limited mobility. A separate visit can be arranged—please confirm the arrangements before you arrive. The cabin offers a different experience from the exhibitions, with a focus on traditional crafts and their practical demonstration.
The Naučná stezka po městě Železnici (Železnice Town Trail) is also designed for curious explorers: the town walk poses a series of questions and ends with a puzzle. The accompanying brochure is available free of charge at the museum’s Kupecký krám (Merchant’s Shop). The Kupecký krám also serves as the tourist information centre for Železnice and its surroundings. The activities offered by Za pověstmi Českého ráje (Following the Legends of the Bohemian Paradise) are designed primarily for families with children aged four to eight.
Hiking trails, cycling and planning
Ĺ˝eleznice lies on the edge of the CHKO ÄŚeskĂ˝ Ráj (Bohemian Paradise Protected Landscape Area) and is a starting point for hiking trails. Cycling routes are available in the surrounding area, both near and farther afield. These options offer different ways to explore the area; no specific route lengths or walking or cycling times are provided. A nature trail about the Battle of JiÄŤĂn, fought on 29 June 1866, also runs nearby.
A cycling and pedestrian route linking Valdice and Ĺ˝eleznice is planned. It is intended to be a shared, illuminated path for pedestrians and cyclists, leading to the local road in TěšĂn. When planning your route, bear in mind that this connection is described as a proposal. Ĺ˝eleznice was connected to the railway in 1903, when services began on the JiÄŤĂn–Turnov line. For current rail travel, please check the latest connections.
