The Church of St. Giles in Markvartice U Sobotky is documented as a parish church as early as 1348. It acquired its present appearance through a Baroque renovation in the second half of the 18th century. The shift from its early parish history to its later architectural form gives the place a clear cultural and historical focus. Other points of interest include archaeological traces, the Markvartické lípy and a regionally renowned reconciliation cross.

Church of St. Giles and cultural events

The mortuary chapel is part of the church’s cultural monument complex; the entire complex is listed among the cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. Since 2009, the church has hosted concerts such as “Hudba z ráje”, “Noc kostelů” and an Advent concert, as well as other cultural events that support the preservation of the church. Dates may vary. If you would like to plan your stay around a concert, check the relevant date before making your travel plans.

Archaeological periods

The Celtic place of worship lies southwest of Markvartice and can be identified by its surviving ramparts; the site is called “V šancích”. The orientation of the ramparts is interpreted as indicating that sunrises and sunsets along their axes correspond to the dates of the equinoxes, solstices and Celtic festivals. The surviving ramparts thus provide an archaeological trace, distinct from the interpretation of their alignment. Archaeological remains of a fortress mentioned around 1340 and abandoned after 1345 lie within the built-up area. An early medieval settlement has also been identified in the centre of the village. The fortress dating to around 1340 and the Church of St. Giles, documented as a parish church as early as 1348, point to different historical traces from the same century; by contrast, the church’s present Baroque appearance dates to the second half of the 18th century.

Linden trees, a house and a reconciliation cross

The Markvartické lípy were planted along the wall at the beginning of the 18th century, at the same time as the church was built. They have been listed as cultural monuments since 1996. A surviving two-storey house with an arcaded gallery also stands near the church. The Markvartice reconciliation cross is described as the oldest known cross in Český ráj. The local history thus includes not only religious architecture, but also trees and house styles, as well as a cross with regional significance.

The dates point to different historical periods: medieval traces, the development of the church and linden trees in the 18th century, and the trees’ later protected status. The history of the place therefore cannot be reduced to a single period or to the church alone.

Hiking trail and travel planning

A green-marked hiking trail runs through Markvartice from Sobotka towards Staré Hrady and Libáň. If you plan to take this route, check the trail markings on site. A concert means planning around a date, while a hiking trail depends on its route and markings. These points of interest can help with different questions: would you like to plan your travel dates around a cultural event, or include a route in your plans?
