Chyjice offers two clear starting points for planning a trip: the Mrlina in the valley and the town’s sacred architectural and artistic history. You can focus your stay on the landscape, the architecture, or a combination of both. Particularly distinctive features include the Church of Sts Simon and Jude, two religious monuments and the Chyjická stráň natural monument.
The Mrlina Valley and Chyjická stráň
Chyjice lies in the valley of the Mrlina, formerly called the Leština. Its banks border the settlement for up to 2.5 kilometres. Another landscape feature is the Chyjická stráň natural monument between Chyjice and Dolany, above the Mrlina on a wooded southwest-facing slope. The riverbanks and slope offer different perspectives: the banks run alongside the settlement, while Chyjická stráň lies above the river. If you want to focus on the landscape, you can consider these two features as separate points of reference when choosing where to visit.
The church and its Baroque furnishings
The Church of Sts Simon and Jude was remodelled in the Baroque style by F. Spannbrucker between 1698 and 1700. These dates refer to the Baroque remodelling, not necessarily to the original construction. The church is part of a protected monument complex that also includes the bell tower and an enclosure wall with a gate. The complex therefore comprises more than just the church building. The church also houses an organ made in 1892 at the workshop of organ builder Josef Kobrle in Lomnice. Almost two centuries separate the Baroque remodelling from the creation of the instrument. This chronology shows that the architectural history and the furnishings represent different historical layers.
Boží muka and the Statue of St John of Nepomuk
The Boží muka, dating from 1779, stands immediately beside the church. It consists of a column with a relief of the Virgin Mary and a small chapel with a relief of Jesus crucified. The Boží muka was restored between 1994 and 1996 and was declared a cultural monument in November 2002. The restoration and its later protected status mark different stages in its history.
Chyjice is also home to a light sandstone statue of St John of Nepomuk, a work of High Baroque sculpture. Its front bears a relief of St Charles Borromeo. The statue was declared a cultural monument on 26 November 2002; its restoration was completed in July 2025. The two objects are easy to distinguish by their design: the Boží muka comprises a column and a small chapel, while the statue combines the figure with a relief on its front.
Cycle route on the edge of the village
Another option for your plans is the popular cycle route No. 4368. It runs along the edge of Chyjice and links locally significant sights, including hillforts and castles. Check the route before setting off. Alongside the individual architectural and artistic works, you can choose a cycle route featuring several cultural and historical destinations as a separate focus for your trip.
