In Jicineves, Baroque architectural history and protected habitats come together on different scales: the castle and chapel tell the story of the locality, while a natural monument in the surrounding area broadens the view of the landscape. When choosing accommodation, it helps to consider these cultural and nature themes separately.

Baroque castle and castle chapel

Jičíněves Castle was built for Count František Josef Schlik between 1715 and 1717, based on plans by Jean Baptiste Mathey. The three-storey Baroque building has a mansard roof and a small turret. These clear architectural features describe the complex without reducing its appeal to a single detail. It is set in an extensive English landscape park with numerous rare and notable trees.

The castle chapel was added to the north side of the castle in 1730. It is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua and the Holy Cross. Its architecture differs from the multi-storey castle building: the chapel has a single nave and a rectangular floor plan with a presbytery. The presbytery is the altar area; the term helps explain the floor plan in more detail.

The chapel also has its own historical timeline: in 1776, it was declared open to the public. This is one historical aspect of its significance. The castle and chapel thus represent both the Baroque architectural history and the religious history of the locality.

Water and protected nature

A local watercourse flowing through Jičíněves feeds Zámecký rybník on the eastern edge of the locality. The pond lies south of the castle.

Species protection is also part of the nature theme: the Natura 2000 site “Jičíněves - zámek” protects the lesser horseshoe bat. The protected natural monument Chyjická stráň is also located in the surrounding area, between Chyjice and Dolany.

The proportions of Chyjická stráň show which habitats predominate there: around 96 percent consists of oak-hornbeam forests, and around 3 percent of ash-alder floodplain forests. Protected bird and plant species find a habitat in the area, including the golden lily and the white woodland hyacinth. These nature themes complement one another: in Jičíněves, the focus is on protecting the lesser horseshoe bat, while the surrounding area adds woodland habitats and other protected species.

Orientation in the cultural landscape

The statue “socha sv. Václava” is made of light sandstone and stands on a massive plinth. It is about 170 metres from the Jičín–Kopidlno main road, on the left-hand side of the road towards Keteň.

Another historic landscape connection leads to Kopidlno: Jičíněves Castle was once linked to the locality by a poplar avenue.

What to consider when looking for accommodation

When looking for a holiday apartment in Jicineves, you can start by asking yourself whether you are mainly interested in the Baroque architectural history, the chapel or the nature in the surrounding area. These interests complement each other, but they are not the same sightseeing destination. Jičíněves Castle is not open to the public, so do not plan to visit the castle interior. The chapel was declared open to the public in 1776. Check current visiting arrangements before planning a visit.
