Ostružno can be understood through three very different points of reference: its regionally significant late Baroque church, the Ostruženské rybníky natural monument and its role for migrating waterbirds, and the long geological history of Svatá Anna Hill. In addition, regional route 4079 passes through the village. Anyone considering a stay can use these features to assess in advance whether cultural history, birdlife, geology, and a location on a regional route match their travel interests.
A late Baroque church as a cultural focal point
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Ostružno is among the region’s most significant and largest late Baroque buildings. This gives two reasons to regard it as a cultural focal point: its architectural period and its standing within the region. In choosing a destination, it can thus be clearly distinguished from the natural features that also define Ostružno.
Ostruženské rybníky and migrating waterbirds
The Ostruženské rybníky natural monument lies partly within the cadastral area of Ostružno. It is one of the region’s most significant stopover sites for migrating waterbirds. Around 80 specially protected species, as well as other notable species, have been recorded there. The stopover function and the number of species describe two different aspects of the same natural feature: the area’s role in bird migration and the scale of its biodiversity. For those who also choose destinations based on nature, this offers a specific focus beyond architecture.
Svatá Anna: geology and Baroque landscape design
The Svatá Anna natural monument also extends into the cadastral area of Ostružno. The hill’s volcanic origins date back around 17 million years. A much more recent story is told by the chapel that Count Šlik had built around 1670: it gave the hill its name and formed part of a planned Baroque landscape design. The two time periods are easy to distinguish: the geological date concerns the volcanic origin, while the chapel bears witness to a specific cultural undertaking. Comparing these themes, visitors can explore natural history and Baroque landscape planning in relation to Svatá Anna.
The two natural monuments have different points of emphasis: at Ostruženské rybníky, the focus is on migratory birds stopping over and the species recorded; at Svatá Anna, it is the hill’s volcanic origin. This makes it easier to tailor an interest in nature towards either birdlife or geology.
Regional route 4079
Regional route 4079 runs from Jičín to Sobotka and passes through Ostružno. In the landscape, it can be identified by colored markings between yellow stripes. The number, endpoints, and markings are all useful for orientation: together, they identify the route and describe how to recognize it on the ground. If you take the route into account when planning your trip, Jičín, Ostružno, and Sobotka provide three points of reference. The route thus adds a regional spatial perspective to the cultural and natural features.
