Prostějov District connects the Drahanská vrchovina with the broad plains of Haná. This brings contrasting landscapes together: open plains and uplands. A prominent landmark is Velký Kosíř. At 442 metres, it is the highest peak in Haná and is part of the Přírodní park Kosíř nature park. The marked Naučná stezka Velký Kosíř trail is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. Those planning their stay around outdoor activities will find a clear focus here; those who want to explore several aspects of the district can complement it with culture, waterscapes or regional foods.
Discover the landscape and nature
The Hrdibořické rybníky, a wetland and peat bog area in Prostějov District, are located near Hrdibořice. The bodies of water and bogs provide habitats for birds and amphibians. Rare plants found there include potočnice drobnolistá and matizna bahenní. These offer distinct nature themes: at Velký Kosíř, the highest peak in Haná shapes the landscape, while at Hrdibořice, wetlands, wildlife and rare plants provide special points of interest.
History, collections and regional customs
Historic windmills have been preserved in Suchdol, Hačky and Přemyslovice. Staré Hradisko is considered the most important Celtic hillfort in Moravia. The Muzeum a galerie v Prostějově is housed in the rooms of the former Renaissance town hall. Its collections cover clocks, geology, ethnography, archaeology and Jewish history. Archaeology is the largest collection, comprising 300,000 inventory items and including finds from the La Tène-period site of Staré Hradisko.
Regional customs also add a cultural dimension to a stay. These include hody (traditional feast days), bear processions, the burial of the bass, Easter whips and Christmas traditions. In Otinoves, a cheese producer makes Niva cheese; sugar is produced at the Vrbátky sugar factory. Those who wish to include culture and regional products in their trip will find specific points of interest alongside the historic sites and collections.
Routes and winter activities
For cycling trips, Route 5, known as the Jantarová cyklostezka, passes through the Prostějovsko region. It is distinct from the historic Jantarová stezka: this trade route for amber ran through the region between the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean. Away from roads, most sections of the Romže cycle path are paved; near Bělecký Mlýn, gravel and forest-track sections are also found. The surfaces therefore vary from section to section.
Winter brings additional seasonal opportunities. There are small ski areas in Kladky and Malé Hradisko; operations depend on the weather. Two groomed cross-country loops run in the Protivanovsko area: Okruh Malé Hradisko and Protivanovský okruh. Winter operations are seasonal. Check current conditions and the grooming status of the trails before travelling.
At the Plumlov Reservoir
The Plumlov Reservoir combines activities on the water with paths around the shore. There are sandy and grassy beaches, and a boat rental is located on the south shore. A circular route around the reservoir is suitable for both walks and cycling trips. Facilities around the lake include guarded car parks, a campsite, Motorest or hotel accommodation, and snack stands. Check facilities and seasonal services before your trip.
