In the center of Pivín stands the single-nave Baroque Church of St. George; the Skalka–písky geological site is also located within Pivín’s cadastral area. This brings together two distinct areas of interest: ecclesiastical architecture and pilgrimage history on the one hand, and an unusual sequence of Lower Badenian sediments on the other. Those choosing Pivín for its cultural history will find the church in the town center; Skalka–písky offers a geological perspective on the area.

Church of St. George and Its History

The church is dedicated to St. George and is also a Marian pilgrimage site. Fragmentary remains of the former perimeter wall have survived; St. George is an immovable cultural monument. “Single-nave” describes a floor plan with one nave, while “Baroque” refers to the architectural style. The church’s religious role, basic layout, and surviving parts of the former enclosure can thus be distinguished.

The high altar features an altarpiece of St. George by the distinguished Olomouc painter Josef Handke. The image of the Virgin Mary is also associated with a specific sequence of events: it was donated to the church on October 8, 1745, and placed above the tabernacle in 1753. The two dates refer to different steps: first the donation, then its placement above the tabernacle.

If you would like to visit the church interior, check the current opening arrangements in advance, as they may vary.

Pilgrimages: Historical Dates

Historically, processions to Our Lady of Pivín took place from spring through autumn. September 8 became the main and later the only Pivín pilgrimage date. If you are planning a visit specifically for a pilgrimage taking place today, check the current date locally.

Skalka–písky and the Nature Trail

Skalka–písky is located within Pivín’s cadastral area and was a sandstone quarry in Lower Badenian sediments. The site features an unusual sequence of Lower Badenian sediments and is a geotourism attraction as well as a field-trip destination. It can be reached from the road via a walkable tourist trail. Its former use as a quarry and its unusual sediment sequence are two distinct aspects of this geological destination.

The Pivín–Skalka nature trail was officially opened in August 2019. Its eight information panels cover the history of the municipalities, the surrounding nature, and the spa towns. Unlike the site, which focuses on sediments, the nature trail covers a broader range of topics. Check the condition of the trail and panels before setting out.

Cycling to Pivín

Marked cycle route No. 5013 leads to Pivín from the direction of Skalka. It is classified as moderately difficult, follows Class II and III roads, and has an asphalt surface. These are separate details to consider when planning: the direction describes the route, while the difficulty rating, road classes, and surface provide further information about it. If you plan to use the route, check the signs and route details before setting out; road conditions can also change.
