Plumlov combines castle history with paths and activities by the water. The castle, the remains of the former fortress and a permanent exhibition explore different aspects of the town’s history. Outdoor activities include a five-kilometre hiking route with a walking time of about an hour and a half, a cycling option, and beaches by the Plumlov Reservoir. You can shape your stay around culture, exercise or time by the water.
Castle History in the Castle Courtyard
Plumlov Castle is a registered cultural monument of the Czech Republic, registration number 37405/7–5689. The present-day castle courtyard also preserves remains of the former fortress: a rocky hill, small sections of wall, cellars, a vaulted castle well and the remains of a cylindrical keep. A keep is a tower within a castle; “cylindrical” describes its round shape. The monument status applies to the castle, while the remains mentioned here belong to the former fortress.
The first sightseeing tour includes the castle and museum exhibition, other exhibitions, and a guided tour of the castle’s first to third floors. There is also a permanent exhibition on the history of the fortress, castle and town of Plumlov at the Plumlov Tourist Information Centre. This also brings the town’s history into focus alongside that of the fortress and castle. The tour content may change, so check the latest visitor information before your visit.
Walking and Cycling Routes
The Okolo Obory circular route is a five-kilometre hiking trail with a walking time of about an hour and a half. Starting points are the Žralok car campsite or the main outlet structure of Podhradský Pond, 100 metres away. The route follows a red-marked hiking trail around the pond in the direction of the neighbouring village of Soběsuky. Trail markings, trail conditions and facilities at the starting points may change; check the latest information before setting out.
The Okolo přehrady circular route can also be completed by bicycle in the opposite direction. It leads from the outlet structure of Podhradský Pond towards Mostkovice, along the stretch between the reservoir and wooded Zlechovský vrch, then across the dam and back over the dam of Podhradský Pond. There are different considerations when choosing between the routes: for Okolo Obory, you can take account of the distance, approximate walking time and starting points; Okolo přehrady offers the option of cycling the route in the opposite direction.
Beaches by the Plumlov Reservoir
There are beaches on both shores of the Plumlov Reservoir. The grassy beach on the south shore has a watercraft rental service. Beach conditions may vary, and rental availability may also change seasonally. Check both for your planned dates, especially if you intend to use the rental service.
