The Church of St. Peter and Paul is Vřesovice’s oldest architectural monument. Its Gothic chancel and three-aisled layout are among the distinctive details of the town’s history. Its present three-aisled form took shape through an extension towards the end of the 17th century. “Three-aisled” describes the division of the church interior into three aisles.
Church, Castle and Historical Details
The church has a detached bell tower dating from 1747. It houses three bells dating from 1990. In the park below the church, there is also a Baroque statue of the Virgin Mary and a stylised Holy Sepulchre dating from 1882. These architectural and artistic works add further evidence from different periods to the view of the church building.
The Chapel of the Holy Cross in the cemetery dates from 1717. The cemetery entrance gate features a statue of St. John of Nepomuk. In the regional context, the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk is a Baroque architectural monument in the Prostějov region dating from the first half of the 18th century.
Vřesovice Castle was built between 1702 and 1704 under Abbot Norbert Želecký of Počenice. Hunting literature describes it as a Baroque hunting lodge. The town’s history thus brings together church buildings and a castle complex from a later period.
Memorial and Visit Planning
The Vřesovice memorial is housed in the former castle chapel. It preserves mainly written and photographic materials, as well as smaller objects from the town. The memorial also houses a reconciliation cross dated to 1599. Different kinds of mementos are thus found together there: documents and images, as well as an older stone artefact.
During the St. Peter and Paul Hody festival, the memorial is regularly open to the public once a year. Visits at other times of the year are also possible by prior telephone appointment with the municipal office. If you plan your stay around a visit during the festival, check the specific date. The Church of St. Peter and Paul can also be visited by prior arrangement; when making arrangements, check whether seasonal confirmation is required.
Předina, the Stream and the Observation Tower
The landscape can be explored by reference to two different high points and a watercourse. At 312 metres, Předina is the highest point in the cadastral area of Vřesovice; the Dobrochov transmitter is located there. The Vřesůvka stream rises at the southern edge of the town and flows through the village.
Immediately north of the edge of the town, a sulphurous mineral spring emerges on the right bank of the Vřesůvka. Its composition is similar to that of the spring in nearby Skalka. The Štátule observation tower is nearby, on the 312-metre-high Předina hill. The ten-metre-high wooden tower stands between Dobrochov, Kelčice and Vřesovice and can be reached from Vřesovice via field paths. Admission is free; visits are at your own risk.
Cycling, Rail and Annual Events
The named Dobrochov–Kelčice–Vřesovice–Výšovice connection is relevant for a cycling trip; it was listed as completed in 2022. The annual brass band festival “Pod hanáckým nebem” offers another reason to plan the timing of your visit. Check the festival’s specific date before travelling.
The nearest railway station is Pivín, on the Olomouc–Nezamyslice line. It is five kilometres by road from Vřesovice. If you are travelling by train, check the timetable for Pivín. When looking for an apartment, your planned visits can help determine the right time to travel: for the memorial, check its opening times; for the festival, its annual date; and for the observation tower, the route along the field paths.
