A wooden Pietà on the main altar of the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and a cycling route that runs through Suchdol show two different sides of the place. In addition, there is the hilly landscape and a hiking route towards Seč. If you are considering Suchdol as a place to stay, you can focus on church art, cycling or hiking.
Hilly landscape and routes
Suchdol lies in the hilly part of the Drahanská vrchovina known as Konická vrchovina. Deeply incised valleys and breakthrough valleys shape this landscape. The landscape is therefore a destination in its own right, complementing the cultural sites with opportunities to spend time outdoors. There are different ways to experience the surroundings to choose from: a cycling route through Suchdol and Jednov, and a hiking route that passes east of the village and continues towards Seč.
Pilgrimage church and chapel
The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was renovated between 1806 and 1809. A wooden Pietà dating from the mid-18th century stands on its main altar. A Pietà depicts Mary with the body of Christ; the date of the artwork and the renovation period of the church point to different times. The original spring emerges beneath the same main altar. The altar is thus a shared point of reference for the Pietà above it and the spring below. This combination of architectural history, sacred artwork and spring gives travellers interested in culture a concrete starting point for exploring the church.
There is another religious building in the village square: the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk was built in 1885. It complements the pilgrimage church with another named place of worship in Suchdol. Those interested in local religious architecture can therefore consider two different buildings and their respective place in the village.
Mlýn Jednov windmill
Mlýn Jednov is a Dutch-type windmill built in 1842. Today it is privately used for recreation and can only be admired from a distance. A visit inside should therefore not be included in your plans. Before your trip, check whether its private use and this information about visits still apply. This distinguishes the mill as a landmark from the churches: here, the focus is on the type of windmill and its year of construction, while opportunities to visit are limited.
Cycling, hiking and getting there
The 36.6-kilometre “Za větrnými mlýny okolo Konice” cycling route passes through Jednov and Suchdol and is open year-round. Its total length gives you a concrete point of reference for planning. As route details can change, check the current route before setting off. A hiking route heads towards Suchdol, runs east of the village and continues through the forest to Seč. The two routes thus differ both in how you travel and in their course: the cycling route passes through two named places, while the hiking route goes east of Suchdol and continues to Seč. Before hiking, check the current route and conditions.
The nearest railway stations for Suchdol are Stražisko and Konice. If you plan to travel by train, check the current connections before departure. This lets you coordinate your journey with your planned focus, whether that is the pilgrimage church, the cycling route or a hike towards Seč.
