If you are weighing up culture and nature as themes for a stay, Skřípov offers several different starting points: sacred architecture, the Mohylník Skřípov archaeological site, a wetland and cycling. The churches offer architectural history and details; the other themes lead to archaeological traces, wildlife and a bike tour. This lets you decide which focus interests you most, rather than combining the different aspects of the place into a single itinerary.

Church and chapel: architectural history and design

The Church of the Ascension of the Lord (Kostel Nanebevstoupení Páně) was built in 1780. In 1835, it was given a polygonal end and two side chapels that form a transept. Here, the transept refers to the structure formed by the side chapels, which are set crosswise to the main building; the polygonal end is another addition to the building. In 2006, the church was declared a cultural monument. Its construction, subsequent structural expansion and designation as a monument can therefore be understood as distinct stages in its history.

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven (Kaple Panny Marie, Královny nebes) offers a different architectural comparison. Its masonry building has a rectangular floor plan with a three-sided end. A four-sided bell tower with a tent roof and a metal cross at its peak stands on the roof ridge. The floor plan and end describe the shape of the building, while the bell tower, roof and cross describe the structure above it. The chapel is the largest of the four chapels in Skřípov.

Franc Fischer is part of the chapel’s history: he had it built using his own funds and donations, and placed inside it a marble sculpture of the Virgin Mary, which, according to Anna Fiedler’s account, was created by her. Two ways of looking at the chapel therefore complement one another: its architectural features describe its form, while the story of Fischer and the sculpture tells of its origins and furnishings.

Archaeological traces and nature

The Mohylník Skřípov archaeological site comprises 16 identified burial mounds. This brings an archaeological theme, with a specific number attached to it, into focus alongside the sacred buildings. The remarkable Skřípov lime tree is estimated to be 300 to 400 years old. This age range is an approximate estimate, unlike the precisely dated construction phases of the church.

The Skřípovský mokřad wetland comprises species-rich grass- and herb-dominated communities, waterlogged areas and other wetlands with numerous protected and endangered plant and animal species. This is about habitats and wetlands, not architectural forms or dates. Together with the Skřípov lime tree, this theme offers a different perspective on the place from that of the historic sacred buildings.

Cycle route and tour distance

Cycle route 5028 passes through Skřípov between Horní Štěpánov and Konice. The bike tour through the Drahanská vrchovina is 83.5 km long in total and includes approximately 1,094 metres of elevation gain. These figures refer to the entire tour; they do not describe only the section through Skřípov. The two figures therefore answer different questions when planning: route 5028 indicates the route through the village, while the total distance and approximate elevation gain give an idea of the scale of the tour through the Drahanská vrchovina. This allows you to distinguish the local section from the broader tour without attributing the overall figures to a single stretch.
