In Pěnčín, an unusual settlement layout, two religious buildings, a pond and several cycling routes come together. You can get to know the place through its architectural history, the landscape or outdoor activities, depending on your interests.

Location and townscape

Pěnčín lies on a plateau at an elevation of about 350 metres above sea level, in the southernmost part of the Zábřežská vrchovina highlands. The village layout also stands out: it is irregular and shaped like a three-pointed star. The location and settlement form give the place a distinctive geographical character that extends beyond individual sights.

Chapel and church: two building histories

The Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built by Augustinians in the 18th century. It has a centralised floor plan, with towers added on the west side. The chapel also preserves a bell dating from 1769. Its construction period, floor plan and bell offer different ways to explore the chapel’s architecture.

The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius was built in 1934 and is connected to a family home. In the early 1970s, it received sgraffito decoration by František Flasar, a painter and stucco artist. The two buildings therefore have distinct histories: the chapel is notable for its 18th-century origins and centralised floor plan, while the church can be distinguished by its construction date and later artistic decoration.

Water, a walk and cycling routes

In the upper part of Pěnčín, you can walk around Nebeský Pond. This is a specific way to explore the place on foot. For a cycling trip, there are two routes with different connections to the area: Cycle Route No. 6033 starts in Pěnčín. Cycle Route No. 5028 leads from the “Zastávka” signpost or junction in Pěnčín to Čechy pod Kosířem. The distinction is useful for navigation: Pěnčín is named as the starting point for Route 6033, while Route 5028 starts at the “Zastávka” junction and ends in Čechy pod Kosířem.

History and memorial sites

The first recorded mention of Pěnčín dates from 1279 and names Ratmír of Pěnčín. Traces of the Lusatian culture have also been found in Pěnčín. Another historical reference is the Milník víry monument on Číhadlo Hill near Pěnčín, which commemorates Jan Hus and Jan Amos Comenius. These topics add connections to the early history of the place and to the two figures alongside its architectural history.

Events in Pěnčín

The second edition of Pěnčínský utopenec, a boat race, took place on Močilka Pond on 16 August 2026. The date refers to this specific edition. Services are held regularly at 10:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of each month at the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius. If this timing is important for your plans, check it again before your trip.
