Mořice offers several distinctly different themes to explore during a stay: Biocentrum Mokroš represents floodplain landscapes and nature observation, while Zahrada pěti smyslů offers learning about plants and the senses. The town’s history comes to life through a church complex, a reconciliation cross, a wayside shrine and a chateau. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide which of these facets you want to shape your stay.
Floodplain Landscapes and Nature Observation at Mokroš
Biocentrum Mokroš represents a floodplain habitat with meadows, woodland and wetlands. It is open to the public as an educational area and contains native flora as well as plants introduced to extend it. Mokroš provides a suitable setting for walks and nature observation. Landscape, plants and an educational purpose thus come together here as three distinct aspects of a nature-themed visit.
The Mokroš educational trail has five information boards. This adds a signposted learning opportunity to the habitat itself.
Learning and Plants at Zahrada pěti smyslů
Zahrada pěti smyslů offers a different focus: it is an educational and recreational area with stations for all five senses, serving children from Mořice and neighbouring villages. Its teaching beds feature traditional rural plants, as well as medicinal herbs and shrubs. The contrast with Mokroš lies in the focus: there, the theme is shaped by floodplain habitat and nature observation, while here the emphasis is on sensory stations and teaching beds.
Local History: Complex, Cross and Wayside Shrine
The complex of the Church of St Martin includes the church, a mortuary, the old part of the cemetery, a boundary wall, a gate and a small wicket gate. It therefore extends beyond the church building itself. Mořice Chateau has been a protected monument since 1958.
The reconciliation cross “Smírčí kříž pokutný” is the oldest monument in Mořice and dates from 1430. It is carved from coarse-grained sandstone, with a bladed weapon carved into its reverse.
The wayside shrine “Boží muka” was erected in 2008 and commemorates a local tragedy. According to an entry in the local chronicle, 18-year-old František Čičinský hanged himself here about 180 years ago, presumably because of unrequited love.
The points of interest within the town’s history also differ: St Martin’s is a complex of several structures, while the reconciliation cross and wayside shrine are individual historical witnesses. The years refer to different facts: 1430 dates the cross, 1958 marks the chateau’s protected status, and 2008 is the year the wayside shrine was erected.
Summer Revival Festival
The Revival Festival Mořice has been a tradition there since 2001 and is a summer open-air festival for revival bands. It adds a seasonal event to the area’s nature and local history. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates in advance and arrange your stay accordingly.
