Dzbel can be explored through three distinct interests: nature and landscape, the architectural styles of its chapels, and the history of ore mining and home linen weaving. These themes offer different starting points when choosing what to visit. Specific points of interest include the protected Na Kozénku natural monument, the chapels and the Kladecko educational trail.

Nature, Landscape and Outdoor Activities

Na Kozénku lies north of Dzbel and is protected as a natural monument. The area protects meadow communities and a disused limestone quarry. Together, they create a clear contrast: protected meadows lie alongside evidence of former limestone extraction. If you are interested both in protected landscapes and in traces of earlier resource use, these two themes come together at Na Kozénku.

A stream rises below Sládkova skála, at Dzbel railway station. The source’s location is defined by two landmarks: the rock above and the station.

The Kladecko educational trail is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. Its stops focus on settlements that have disappeared and sites of former iron ore mining. If you would like to combine outdoor activity with history, these two themes provide the trail’s focus.

The station building and platforms in Dzbel are currently not wheelchair accessible. If step-free access is important to you, take this limitation into account when planning.

Chapels with Different Architectural Styles

The Chapel of St. Anne stands behind Dzbel railway station. Its façade faces east and features corner pilasters and an attic gable crowned with volutes. The architectural emphasis is therefore on the façade.

There is also a Chapel of the Virgin Mary in Dzbel, but it has different architectural features. It is built of masonry, has a rectangular floor plan with a semicircular end, and is topped by a gabled roof. A small hexagonal roof turret sits in the middle of the ridge. The two chapels can be compared by looking at different features: for St. Anne’s, the façade’s orientation and gable decoration stand out; for the Marian chapel, the floor plan and roof structure.

Work, Mining and Linen

The history of iron ore involved more than mining: ore was extracted at Ródnéch, north of Dzbel, and smelted in a nearby furnace at Hirtův mlýn below the village. Smelting means processing ore in a furnace; as well as extraction, this stage is part of the history of mining.

Flax was also grown on a larger scale in Dzbel and woven into linen at home for household use. Compared with ore mining and smelting, this points to a different kind of work: linen weaving was connected to household needs, while the history of iron ore involved extraction and processing at different locations. This contrast helps put two distinct aspects of local history into context.
