The original stone structure of the Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene dates from the late 15th century; its freestanding bell tower is 37 metres high. These specific details lead into a local history that also features archaeological coin finds, ethnographic traditions and theatre. The Masarykova lípa educational trail adds a natural history perspective.

The Church and Archaeological Traces

The Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene is one of the important landmarks of Němčice nad Hanou. Its original stone structure was severely damaged in 1663 during a Tatar invasion. The freestanding bell tower is a protected monument and is one of five freestanding bell towers in Moravia. The building’s history and the tower thus offer two different points of interest if you are interested in the town’s historic architecture.

The archaeological site of Němčice nad Hanou offers another historical perspective. Celtic coins and other coins from the ancient world have been found there. Numerous coin fragments, blanks and pieces of precious metal also attest to the La Tène settlement’s role in production. This makes the story of the finds more than a list of individual coins: their manufacture is also an important part of the archaeological story.

Ethnographic Traditions and Theatre

The Hanácký němčický kroj is considered a local symbol. A municipal cultural bulletin from 2020 describes it as richly decorated with embroidery and lace. The Pantlék folklore ensemble has been active since 1991 and continues to preserve and pass on ethnographic traditions in Němčice nad Hanou.

The history of exhibitions also goes back a long way: the first ethnographic exhibition in the Bohemian lands was held in Němčice nad Hanou in 1887. In 1971, the town hosted a showcase of theatre ensembles for the first time. Theatre showcases have been held annually since 1983; since 1994, the annual showcase of amateur theatre ensembles has been called Hanácký divadelní máj.

Hanácký divadelní máj is a regional showcase of rural theatre ensembles and a regional showcase of spoken theatre for children. Selected ensembles may be referred on to KDP Vysoké n. J. or CP Popelka Rakovník. The plays and ensembles featured vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your stay around a performance, check the dates and programme for the relevant edition.

Masarykova lípa Educational Trail

The Masarykova lípa educational trail is a 1.5-kilometre walking route. There are six information boards along the route, with two more in the grove by the Masaryk lime tree. The boards cover the history of Němčice nad Hanou, T. G. Masaryk, plants, animals and geography. Interactive boards also explore local flora and fauna.

The trail brings together several subjects rather than focusing on just one: local history and nature are both covered, as is the surrounding area. If you are looking for a walk with points of interest during your stay, its 1.5-kilometre length gives you a concrete basis for planning. Cultural events have also been held in the renovated Masarykova lípa grove. This former use adds a cultural connection to the trail’s natural history and historical themes without making any claims about a current events programme.

A Bike Tour as an Additional Point of Interest

Na bicyklech Němčickem is described as a traditional bike tour. The 2025 edition described it as such; future dates and arrangements may vary. If you would like to include the tour in your travel plans, check the details for the relevant edition.
