Skalka U Prostějova brings together the history of Lázně Skalka and cultural, woodland and geological themes. The spa was founded in 1928; the Chapel of St. John the Baptist was built a century earlier. There is also an educational trail, a project in the spa forest and two geological sites. Those planning a stay can choose from different focuses: local history, outdoor features or geological highlights.
Spa history and mineral springs
Lázně Skalka uses four named local mineral springs: PRAMEN SVATOPLUK, PRAMEN CYRIL A METODĚJ, STUDÁNKA JULINKA and STUDÁNKA JAN. Their names provide specific points of reference for the spa. The Chapel of St. John the Baptist in Skalka offers a distinct historical perspective. It was built in 1828; its name is associated with the local healing springs. Its construction therefore dates exactly one century before the spa was founded in 1928. These two dates help place the chapel and spa town in their historical context, while their connection to the springs brings their themes together.
Educational trail and features in the spa forest
The Pivín–Skalka educational trail was officially opened in August 2019. Its eight information panels cover the history of the municipalities, the surrounding nature and the spas. Veronika Janíková created the educational trail; it was implemented in cooperation with the municipalities of Pivín and Skalka. Its themes offer a distinct way to explore the region: alongside spa history, the surrounding nature is also in focus. The panels connect these subjects without limiting the trail to a single theme.
The “Tóny lesa” project in the spa forest includes educational and play features: an educational dendrophone, a memory game and “Strom jako dům”. There are also balance and fitness features, as well as a forest megaphone. The project thus brings together different kinds of features. Check their condition before your visit. The sports area at Lázně Skalka also includes a multi-purpose court and a mini-golf course; their availability may change.
Geological features
Skalka - písky is an extensive, horseshoe-shaped former quarry. It has a diameter of 70 metres, and its walls are 10 to 12 metres high. The site is near Lázně Skalka, on a marked hiking trail, and reveals a unique sequence of Lower Badenian sediments. Its shape, dimensions and geological structure give the site a profile distinct from the spa and cultural themes. Its former use remains part of the description: it is a former quarry.
Jezírka Skalka is another geotourism site. The former small quarries are now filled with water. Here, greywackes of the Myslejovice Beds emerge from Lower Badenian pelites of the Carpathian Foredeep. Jezírka Skalka therefore focuses on the geological relationship between rock layers, while Skalka - písky is characterised by its horseshoe shape, dimensions and sediment sequence. The two descriptions offer different geological perspectives on Skalka.
