Určice lies in the western part of Haná, southwest of Prostějov and at the foot of the Drahanská Highlands. Two distinct points of interest are central to planning a trip: the architectural and religious history surrounding the Church of St John the Baptist, and marked hiking and cycling routes. This makes it possible to explore the town both through its cultural history and by following specific routes. When deciding which to focus on, you can first choose whether historical connections or a tour on foot or by bike will be the deciding factor.
The church and layers of history
The present-day Church of St John the Baptist was built in the Baroque style between 1727 and 1734. Beside it stands a detached tower, which certainly dates from the mid-15th century. The two construction periods are almost three centuries apart. The church therefore belongs to the Baroque period, while the tower provides a much older point of reference. This difference is significant for understanding Určice’s timeline: the architectural history encompasses neighbouring buildings from different periods, not just a single construction date.
Religious connections and historical documents
The remains of Kateřina z Kravař lie beneath the church. A statue of St Florian in Určice dates from 1766. The origins of the Marian pilgrimage site are also linked to a named person: it was established by the parish priest Pavel Alexander Jakšíček. The town’s history therefore extends beyond its construction periods to include a named person in the crypt, a dated statue, and the historical origins of a pilgrimage site.
If you would like to explore historical documents as well as buildings, visitors can consult documents in the Určice library. Check the visiting arrangements in advance to make sure this option fits your plans.
Marked routes on foot and by bike
The marked green hiking route runs from Otaslavice through Určice to Plumlov. It passes through the town, providing a clear sequence for orientation: Otaslavice, Určice, Plumlov. If you choose to hike, you can see Určice as part of this named route. The sequence of towns also distinguishes this route from the cycling connections, which use different towns and numbers for orientation.
Cycling route No. 5013 starts in Prostějov and runs via Určice, Výšovice and Skalka to the Němčicko microregion. No. 5041 is designated as the Určice–Vranovice–Dobrochov–Vyškov connection. The two routes are described differently: Prostějov is named as the starting point for No. 5013, while No. 5041 is identified by the specified sequence of towns. When comparing cycling connections, the route number and sequence of towns help you tell them apart.
The marked hiking route and numbered cycling connections offer different starting points for a tour: for the hiking route, the Otaslavice–Určice–Plumlov sequence is central; for the cycling routes, the number and named towns are useful guides. You can first decide which activity you prefer, then identify the suitable connection by its specific route.
