The chalk cliffs of Étretat form great arches and a striking rock needle rising from the sea. This stretch of coast showcases a distinctive side of Seine-Maritime; at the same time, the département offers far more than its famous cliffs. Its 130-kilometre coastline links Étretat, Fécamp, Dieppe and Le Tréport. The routes through cliffs, forests and valleys also give the destination its varied character.
Coast, trails and changing perspectives
More than 155 kilometres of marked walking trails run through cliffs, forests and valleys. For cycling, there are over 600 kilometres of cycling routes and 1,000 kilometres of circular cycle routes. These figures describe different ways to explore the landscape: marked paths on foot and an extensive network for cycling trips.
Orchards and regional produce
The 62-kilometre Route des Fruits passes through orchards, traditional settlements and areas of historic architectural heritage. It can be travelled by car, bicycle or on foot. Along the route, visitors can visit local fruit farms, which sell their produce directly at the farm or in local shops. The Seine ferries on the route are free and accessible to light vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. If you plan to take a ferry, check the timetable in advance.
Regional specialities include Neufchâtel AOP: a soft cow’s milk cheese with a bloomy rind, best known in its heart shape. The production area covers 133 communes in Seine-Maritime and one commune in the Oise département. A trip through the region therefore brings together landscape exploration and insights into local produce.
Wetlands, forest and outdoor activities
The Marais Vernier lies in the Seine estuary and is a 4,500-hectare wetland and marshland area. Guided and themed visits to the protected area focus on its landscape and wildlife. Nature enthusiasts will find a different way to explore here than along the coast.
In the 26-hectare Parc animalier de la forĂŞt domaniale de Roumare, visitors can encounter red deer, wild boar and other forest animals in their natural surroundings. Four observation points are located around the deer enclosure, and picnic tables are set along the route. The route is accessible to wheelchair users and people with strollers. Facilities and accessibility may change, so check the conditions before your visit.
The free Balade branchée en forêt de Roumare is an interactive forest adventure with 16 stops. It consists of two loops: a 3-kilometre circuit around the wildlife park and a 4-kilometre route that goes deeper into the forest. The options differ both in length and in whether the wildlife park or the forest is the main focus. Route details and the format of the experience may change; check them before setting out.
The Base de loisirs de Jumièges - Le Mesnil combines activities on land, in the air and on the water. They include treetop adventure courses, mini golf, pedal go-karts, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and pedal boats. Activity availability may vary by season. The base is served by public transport line 530 and daily shuttles from Rouen. Transport services and routes may change, so check the current timetable before travelling.
Monastic history, architecture and everyday culture
The Abbaye de Jumièges is one of the oldest and most important Benedictine monasteries in Normandy. It stands in a 15-hectare enclosed park, which has been classified since 1947. In Le Havre, UNESCO recognises the post-war reconstruction as an outstanding example of urban planning and architecture. Both sites offer different perspectives on the region’s built heritage.
The Parc naturel régional des Boucles de la Seine Normande is home to an ethnographic collection of 12,000 objects, classified as a Musée de France. The Écomusée Pays de Caux - Traditions du Lin complements this perspective with a permanent exhibition about flax, a family area where visitors can learn about flax retting, an educational farm area and a nature trail.
