In Contremoulins, Saint-Martin Church, a flax oven and the Clos-masure reflect different aspects of the area’s heritage. A cycling loop runs from Ganzeville towards the village; the Ganzeville Valley lies in the wider region. Local architectural history, a specific route and a landscape thus sit alongside one another at different scales.

Heritage and architecture

Saint-Martin Church in Contremoulins dates from 1648. A flax oven is also part of the local heritage; Contremoulins has one of the few flax ovens to have survived to this day. There is also a Clos-masure in Contremoulins, a building type typical of Normandy. The details highlight different aspects: the church has a precise construction date, the oven is notable for the rarity of its survival, and the Clos-masure for its regional architectural tradition. Separately, the Manoir de Bariville is a residential building made of brick and flint; a typical thatched cottage stands right next to it.

The Château de Gruville has its own architectural history: from 1876, it was built by the architect Camille Albert for Alexandre Le Grand, founder of Bénédictine de Fécamp. The Château de Gruville includes a model farm and crenellated water towers, built between 1886 and 1888. The Château de Gruville is partly protected as a historic monument. The dates distinguish the start of construction from a later building phase: the towers were built between 1886 and 1888, after construction of the château began in 1876.

Cycling loop and landscape

The “Circuit 2: La vallée de la Ganzeville” cycling loop starts at the church in Ganzeville and heads towards Contremoulins. The loop is 20 km long and takes 1 hour 30 minutes. Distance and duration answer different questions: 20 km describes the route’s length, while 1 hour 30 minutes is the time needed. The loop is also included in the PDESI, the departmental plan for spaces, sites and routes. Check local route conditions before setting off.

The Ganzeville Valley lies in the wider region. Woodlands and biodiversity shape it; it is considered a well-preserved natural area. The focus thus shifts from individual buildings to a landscape in the wider area. If you would like to make nature as well as architecture part of your trip, you can take this regional natural setting into account when choosing your destination.

Discover cider

At the Cidrerie des Hautes Falaises, visitors can learn about cider production, from collecting the apples to bottling. Different ciders are available to taste free of charge. The experience therefore covers the process from its beginning to the finished drink; production and tasting are two distinct aspects of this culinary theme. Visitor arrangements may change, so check them before your visit, especially if you plan to take part in a tasting.
