Fishing, hiking, architectural history and a visit to the market offer different ways to enjoy a stay in Aumale. If you’re looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to try fishing, include a marked trail in your plans, or spend time visiting historic sights? This makes it easier to choose Aumale as a destination based on your specific interests.

Fishing and hiking

The Villa des Houx pond, covering about 50 ares, is rich in white fish and rainbow trout. It’s a good place to try fishing and introduce children to the activity. The pond is therefore a practical option if you’d like to include fishing in your trip for the first time. The marked Circuit No. 20 du Bois de la Vierge hiking trail runs through Aumale; its PDESI registration is still pending. Take this status into account when planning and use the trail’s full name for orientation.

Architecture and history

Aumale Town Hall dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. Its council chamber houses a collection of faience that recalls the existence of two manufactories between 1811 and 1834. The Halle au Beurre is a former 16th-century courthouse; its basement housed prisons. The Church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul is considered a particularly remarkable work of Renaissance architecture. The Moulin du Roy – Minoterie Lambotte is considered an important part of France’s industrial heritage and has been classified as a historic monument since 2004.

Saint-Martin d’Auchy Abbey reached the height of its splendour in the 12th and 13th centuries. These dates refer to different things: for the town hall, they refer to the building; for the abbey, to its historical heyday; and for the Moulin du Roy, to the year it was classified as a monument. This distinction helps put the sites in historical context by separating building history, a period of flourishing and later recognition.

Market, season and getting there

Aumale’s weekly market takes place on Saturday mornings at Place du Monument aux Morts. Stalls sell dairy products, cheese, fruit and vegetables. If your trip falls on a public holiday, check whether the market is taking place as usual that Saturday. The outdoor areas and park of Saint-Martin d’Auchy Abbey are open to visitors free of charge for six weeks in summer, except on Sundays. Check the specific dates before your visit.

Aumale can be reached via the A 29 and A 28 motorways. These routes are a useful reference point for travelling by road; the best route for you will depend on where you’re starting from. For choosing your travel dates, the Saturday-morning market and the seasonal opening of the abbey grounds are the specific time windows to bear in mind. If you’d like to include both in your stay, first check the market date and the summer visiting period.
