Church art and different phases of construction give Aubermesnil-Beaumais a distinctive cultural and historical character. Saint-Paul d’Aubermesnil is a Romanesque church; Saint-Laurent-de-Beaumais features a 16th-century reconstruction with older surviving sections. There is also a walking trail and two public transport services. This allows you to plan culture, exercise and travel as different parts of your stay.

Romanesque Architecture and Art at Saint-Paul

Saint-Paul d’Aubermesnil is a Romanesque church. Its bell tower dates from the 12th century and is located above the entrance portal. A 13th-century baptismal font is decorated with crozier motifs. The tower and baptismal font draw attention to different elements: the entrance and a detail of the church furnishings.

The main altar features an altarpiece signed and dated “Roger 1715”. The church also contains the painting “Sainte Marie-Madeleine au pied de la Croix”, signed and dated “Drouet 1829”, as well as statues of Saint Clair and Saint Paul. These dates complement the Romanesque building with artworks from later centuries and give the furnishings their own chronological sequence.

Older Building Elements at Saint-Laurent-de-Beaumais

Saint-Laurent-de-Beaumais was rebuilt in the 16th century. The choir and bell tower of the previous 13th-century church have been preserved. The nave portal also dates from the 16th century. The bell tower is made of white stone and is topped by a slate spire built in the 17th century. The reconstruction and the surviving parts of the earlier church thus represent different building phases, while the later spire adds another layer of history.

The History of Aubermesnil and Beaumais

Aubermesnil and Beaumais were once neighboring villages. The first recorded mentions of both names date back to the 13th century. Later, the parishes of Aubermesnil and Beaumais were united by royal decree on April 24, 1822. The early mentions and the uniting of the parishes are distinct historical milestones: one points to the written record, the other to the date of their union.
