Bolbec offers several distinct cultural themes for a stay: textile technology, church architecture and historic collections. The attractions differ both in subject matter and in their visiting arrangements.
Textile history at the Atelier-Musée du Textile
The Atelier-Musée du Textile is located on the site of the former Desgenétais factory on Rue Auguste Desgenétais. During visits, the use of older textile machines is demonstrated; check the visiting arrangements in advance. The collection includes original and reproduced Indiennes fabrics, as well as printed textiles. The demonstrations draw attention to how the machines work, while the fabric collection focuses on the printed materials. This makes it possible to consider the museum’s technical and textile aspects separately, without reducing them to the same kind of visit.
Churches and their different timelines
Construction of today’s Église Saint-Michel began in 1774, based on plans by the Parisian architect Pierre Patte. The church has more than 60 statues and stained-glass windows. It also has an organ built in 1630 for a church in Rouen and designated a historic monument in 1992. The church’s construction history and the instrument’s earlier history thus lead to two different points in time.
For Bolbec’s Protestant Temple, completion and the first service took place in the same year: construction was completed in 1797, and the first service was held at Christmas 1797. An organ built by Cavaillé-Coll was installed there in May 1852. The Chapelle Sainte-Anne offers a later architectural landmark. It was inaugurated in 1904 in the Byzantine and Romanesque styles. Its stained-glass windows, designed in 2023, depict the industrial, architectural and cultural history of the community; they were presented to the public from May 2024. The churches thus offer different points of interest, from their construction dates and furnishings to the subjects depicted.
Historic library and Médiathèque
Bolbec’s historic library preserves 3,700 works in large bookcases. Its rare works include “Description de l’Égypte” and “Les Galeries historiques de Versailles” by Charles Gavard. Visits are now possible only by special request or on a special occasion. If you plan to visit the library, check the visiting arrangements in advance.
Another option is the intercommunal Médiathèque Caux Seine agglo in Bolbec. It offers books, audio texts, magazines, CDs, sheet music and DVDs for use on site or for borrowing. Its year-round program includes stories and storytelling, arts and crafts, philosophy and digital workshops, exhibitions and concerts. As program details may change, it is worth checking the latest dates before visiting. The historic library and the Médiathèque therefore differ both in their collections and in how they can be used.
Green space and getting around Bolbec
The Val-aux-Grès estate includes a 67-hectare green space and is now a cultural center for the town of Bolbec. This adds another local point of interest alongside the churches and collections, without requiring a specific itinerary.
