Varneville-Bretteville offers several specific points of interest for a stay: the Le Bourg Joli circular walk, the history of its churches and village, and crafts at Atelier du Bel Évent. The route has a clearly stated distance and duration; group visits to the atelier require an appointment. This helps you distinguish during planning which activities need their own time slot and which must be arranged in advance.

Le Bourg Joli: Distance, Duration and Landscape

The Bourg Joli walk starts in Varneville-Bretteville, is 8.5 kilometres long and is classified as a two-hour circular walk of moderate difficulty. When planning, you can weigh up three factors: the distance, the estimated time and the stated difficulty level. The route passes through beech forests and embankments typical of the Pays de Caux.

There are two wells along the route, described on information panels provided by the Office de Tourisme Terroir de Caux. You can also see the church of Saint-Médard and a nearby well. Alongside its landscape features, the walk therefore offers specific points of interest. The two hours refer to the circular walk; you can plan any additional visits as separate activities.

Churches and Local History

Varneville-Bretteville was formed in 1823 by the merger of Bretteville-du-Petit-Caux and Varneville-aux-Grès. The portal of Église Saint-Vincent-et-Saint-Médard has two small turrets, added in the first half of the 16th century. Saint-Vincent Church in Le Bourg Joli is mentioned around 1240; its choir from that period has been preserved. The choir dating from around 1240 is considerably older than the turrets added in the first half of the 16th century; the merger of the two villages did not take place until 1823.

The church of Saint-Médard contains a statue of Saint Francis of Assisi. Église Saint-Vincent-et-Saint-Médard is accessible to people with reduced mobility. Check current access arrangements before your visit.

Archaeological Traces and Crafts

Near former sandstone quarries, Camp de la Bouteillerie preserves traces of a Gallo-Roman camp. This adds another, much older historical period to the history of the village and its churches.

At Atelier du Bel Évent, fashion or decorative accessories are designed, drawn and made according to French tradition. The atelier offers free visits for groups year-round by appointment. If you want to include this craft-focused activity in your plans, make sure to arrange a group visit in advance.

Local Produce and Travel Planning

La Printanière produces kiwis and kiwai. In 2023–2024, GAEC du Printemps offered kiwis and kiwai for sale directly from the farm. Check whether farm sales are currently available before making the trip.
