The hiking trails around Sainte-Marie-au-Bosc pass through landscapes of valleuses and forests. The area also has a history reflected in surviving parts of the church and a school-and-town-hall building. Two hikes offer different highlights: the Circuit du Fond des Bois leads to the Bois de Beaurepaire and passes rural landscape features; the Circuit des Chênes crosses a wooded area and follows sections of the GR21. This lets you include nature and local history in your travel plans.

Hiking between forest and valleuses

The Circuit du Fond des Bois passes through Sainte-Marie-au-Bosc, Beaurepaire and Gonneville-la-Mallet, and leads to the Bois de Beaurepaire. Along the hike, you can see thatched cottages, orchards typical of the Pays de Caux, and a wayside cross. Alongside its forest destination, the rural buildings and landscape features along the route also shape the character of this tour.

Another route is the Circuit des Chênes. It passes through Sainte-Marie-au-Bosc, Pierrefiques and Le Tilleul, crosses a wooded area and follows some sections of the GR21. The hike is of moderate difficulty, 8.4 km long, and listed as taking 2 hours and 10 minutes. This information helps you gauge the distance and time required when planning your day. As routes may change, check them before setting out; for the Circuit des Chênes, you should also verify the route details locally.

Church and local history

The present-day church of Sainte-Marie-au-Bosc is dedicated to Sainte Marie d’Égypte. Its bell tower and choir, dating from the 12th century, have been preserved. The former nave was destroyed as a result of ground subsidence. Both surviving parts and later changes are therefore part of the architectural history of the present-day church.

An historic form of the place name also points to the village’s past: “Sancte Marie de Fifcannemse Sylva” is recorded for the year 1050. The name refers to the former forests of Fécamp. This connection to the landscape adds an older trace to the architectural history, already echoed in a recorded place name.

The village centre is also home to a mairie-école built by Antonin Gosset; construction began in 1932. It adds another dated building to the village’s medieval church features. For a stay with an interest in history, there are therefore several points of reference from different periods: the 12th-century bell tower and choir, the history of the nave, and a building project that began in 1932.

Planning local transport

FiLBus is an on-demand bus service operated by LiA. In the area covered by the Communauté urbaine Le Havre Seine Métropole, it offers on-demand, stop-to-stop journeys; Sainte-Marie-au-Bosc is one of the municipalities served. If you plan to use the service, check the booking requirements and operating details before travelling. These may change. This allows you to plan your journey around the on-demand bus service without assuming a particular connection or fixed schedule.

The length and duration of the Circuit des Chênes can be factored into your plans for the day; along the Circuit du Fond des Bois, you can enjoy different named features, including orchards and thatched cottages. This distinction helps you decide whether Sainte-Marie-au-Bosc suits your travel interests.
