A stay in Cany-Barville can be planned around a range of interests: heritage, walking routes, water sports or cycling. Château de Cany was built between 1640 and 1646 for Pierre Le Marinier. At Lac de Caniel, you can enjoy water sports and a bathing beach; the Véloroute du Lin offers another way to shape your stay. If you’re looking for a hotel in Cany-Barville, first consider which of these interests matters most for your trip.

Cultural routes with different themes

The “Cany au fil de l’eau” walking route invites you to discover Cany-Barville’s historical and cultural heritage and can be explored on foot at your own pace. It is about 3.5 kilometres long. The Château and Chapelle de Barville are not included in the route’s length. Fifteen information panels along the route introduce the town’s historical and cultural heritage. So, when estimating the distance, don’t count these two sites as part of the stated length.

The Chemin des poètes offers a different theme: this walking route, about four kilometres long, brings together culture, architectural heritage and green spaces. Its 28 panels showcase works by notable poets as well as contemporary authors. The two routes therefore differ not only in their panels, but also in the themes they explore. While “Cany au fil de l’eau” focuses on local historical and cultural heritage, the Chemin des poètes turns the spotlight on literature and landscaped surroundings. Access to and conditions on the Chemin des poètes may change, so check the route before setting out.

Water sports and cycling

Lac de Caniel near Cany-Barville offers water sports such as water skiing, sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and pedal boating. Some activities may be seasonal. There are also picnic tables around the lake. The bathing beach offers lifeguard-supervised swimming; beach and swimming conditions may be subject to seasonal rules. If you’re planning to spend time by the water, take the seasonal availability of your chosen activity into account.

For a longer cycling route, the Véloroute du Lin is another option. It is 75 kilometres long, of which 42 kilometres are developed for cyclists. There are two access points in Cany-Barville: at the former railway station and near Château de Cany-Barville. As local access points or the route may change, check the details before setting off. The two access points are associated with different landmarks; it helps to decide in advance where you want to join the route.

Chapel, church and garden

Chapelle de Barville stands on a small island in the Durdent and has long been a place of pilgrimage in honour of Saint Simeon. The pilgrimage still takes place on the first weekend in May; exact dates may vary from year to year. The chapel grounds are freely accessible. Interior visits take place during the Heritage Days. Église Saint Martin is generally open during the day; check its opening arrangements before visiting. The two religious buildings therefore offer quite different visiting options: access to the chapel grounds is free, while interior visits are limited to the Heritage Days.

As a public green space, Parc du Clos Saint Martin offers another view of the Durdent: the flower-filled garden is crossed by the river. Manoir de Caniel is also located in Cany-Barville. Together with the Château, the chapel and the church, these sites offer different ways to explore the local culture, without requiring a single set itinerary.

Plan your stay around your interests

For a stay focused on culture, the panels along the two routes, the religious sites and the Château are highlights. If you’d rather spend time by the water, Lac de Caniel offers a range of water sports, a bathing beach and picnic tables; for cyclists, the Véloroute’s length and developed sections are useful points of reference. These options offer different experiences. Choose your hotel and plan your days according to what you actually want to do, and check the specific visiting conditions for seasonal activities.
