Wanchy-Capval brings together two distinct travel highlights: the church’s architecture and the moderate Le Mont Landrin hike. The church features architectural forms and details from various centuries; the route covers 10.92 kilometres from the heights of Mont Landrin back down into the valley. This lets you consider cultural history and a specific hike as different options when planning your trip.

Church Architecture and History

The church in Wanchy-Capval is built of stone and flint, with architectural elements dating from the 11th, 16th and 17th centuries. A Romanesque square structure rises above the central bell tower, with round-arched openings arranged one above another. An old weather vane from the 18th century crowns the tower. The repeated arches above the square base give the tower a clear vertical structure.

At the entrance is a Renaissance portal made of white stone, decorated with three busts: a woman, an angel and a man. The nave was rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries after damage caused by the Calvinists in 1568 and a lightning strike. The Romanesque tower and Renaissance portal provide distinct architectural accents; the history of the nave adds the story of its reconstruction after the damage.

Inside is an arched confessional, described as rare. The choir preserves woodwork in the Beaubec style and an eagle-shaped lectern. The bell from the former church in Capval is also displayed at the entrance. The stained-glass windows were restored and reinstalled in 2006.

In the parish church of Saint-Mellen in Capval, the sculpture group entitled “Saint Mellen? Saint évêque, un donateur” is located at the southern side altar. The tabernacle and the stepped structure of the high altar are in the choir. Their locations distinguish these objects: the sculpture group is at the southern side altar, while the tabernacle and stepped structure are in the choir.

Hiking and Landscape

The moderate Le Mont Landrin hike is 10.92 km long. It starts in Wanchy-Capval, climbs to the heights of Mont Landrin and then returns down into the valley to the hamlet of Capval. The route therefore includes both an ascent to the heights and the subsequent return to the valley. Its length and difficulty provide a clear basis for choosing the hike; check current trail conditions before setting out.

The wider regional natural environment is also of interest: Wanchy-Capval is listed as a municipality within the continental Type 2 ZNIEFF area “La vallée de l'Eaulne.” In the wider region, the Eaulne is a limestone-rich river with cool, usually oxygen-rich waters. These conditions are suitable for salmonids and other migratory fish. The river ecology of the wider area and the specific hiking route thus offer different nature-related themes.

The difference is clear when choosing your focus: the church offers specific architectural and furnishing details, while the hike is a designated route of moderate difficulty. If you plan to hike Le Mont Landrin, take current trail conditions into account in your preparations.
