Berneval-Le-Grand combines coastal scenery with specific cycling and historical themes. The Valleuse de Berneval-le-Grand leads to a beach of sand and pebbles; there are also named routes and historical connections. When planning a stay, you can first decide whether your main focus will be the coast, outdoor activities or local history.

Coast and Natural Areas

Berneval-le-Grand lies on the edge of the Littoral cauchois Natura 2000 site (FR2300139) and the La Falaise de Berneval-le-Grand ZNIEFF Type I site (230016052). The town also lies partly within the Le littoral de Neuville-lès-Dieppe au Petit-Berneval ZNIEFF Type II site (23000304). The spatial relationships differ: Berneval-le-Grand lies on the edge of two sites, and partly within the ZNIEFF Type II site.

The Valleuse de Berneval-le-Grand leads to a beach of sand and pebbles. A monument overlooking the beach at the valleuse commemorates Operation Jubilee in 1942. Here, the beach’s specific terrain meets a historic memorial site.

The beach at Petit-Caux is shared by the delegated municipalities of Berneval-le-Grand and Saint-Martin-en-Campagne. In summer, the beach has facilities including a lifeguard station. Check its current operating hours before your visit, as it is a seasonal facility.

Cycling and Trail Running

The Tournant cycling route is 3.5 kilometres long and starts at Place de l’Église in Berneval-le-Grand. Its distance and starting point are therefore specified; check the current signposting before setting out.

A trail route is intended for intermediate-level trail runners. The Parcours Trail · Dieppe, Berneval-le-Grand is a circular route that starts at the port of Dieppe and follows the coast to Berneval beach. Check the route conditions and markings before setting out.

The route descriptions have different points of focus: Tournant specifies the distance and start in Berneval-le-Grand, while the Parcours Trail is described as a circular route starting in Dieppe and following the coast. This lets you compare a cycling route with a specified distance with a trail loop whose coastal course is described.

Local History

The former parish church of Notre-Dame in Berneval-le-Grand was destroyed by Allied bombing on 3 June 1944. Its main construction phases date to the 10th century (?) and the 11th century (?) as well as the first half of the 13th century. These construction phases therefore took place many centuries before its destruction in 1944.

A visit to the rebuilt town centre also provides information about the historical context. Together, these offer two distinct ways to explore local history: the construction phases and destruction of the former church, and the contextual information provided during a visit to the rebuilt centre.
